Default Which Supes Title to buy?

Recently I have been gettign my girlfriend into comics. I know she likes superman more than anyone should but im afraid her knowledge of superman comics and comics in general is vague at best. I want her to start buying comics(she wants to) so she can understand more, get a good history of her favorite hero.

I myself am not a HUGE DC fan but i know my stuff...kinda, so when it comes to Superman comics i dont know so much either. I know who is writing what comics, i know villans, other heroes, and i flip through every known and then, but i really have no idea what comic is the best for a beginner and what trades etc, I should have her get. Superman? Action Comics? JLA? Any help?

BIRTHRIGHT is the retelling of his origin, which is now the official origin of Superman. You could also get FOR TOMORROW, which is a story very heavy on metaphors on God and The Devil. However, there's people in this forum that didn't like this story, and that's because it's very different from the usual Superman stuff.

You could get the UP, UP AND AWAY! TPB, which basically explains how Superman came back under the spotlight after one year without powers, due to what happened in Infinite Crisis. Excellent story. The same for KINGDOM COME, which is an Elseworlds story (an alternate future or past -- in this case the future --) of the Justice League, but focusing on Superman.

Goodbye León (november 16th, 1993 - june 12th, 2009). You were, are and always will be the best friend I ever had. I will always love you and never forget you. And please, please forgive me.

Thank you for teaching me about love, patience and caring. Rest in Peace, my friend. I hope that wherever it is you are now, you can run and play as much as you want.

All Star Superman is great. Actually, to be honest, I think all three Superman titles are great right now. But I LOVE All Star Superman.

I'm not so sure this is true anymore. It seems several elements of Birthright have been retconned by Infinite Crisis.

Superman is by Kurt Busiek & Carlos Pacheco. Their first issue just came out a couple months ago. Check it out and see if you like it. At the very least, it's well written and beautifully drawn.

Action Comics by Geoff Johns, Richard Donner & Adam Kubert will start this month so you can check that out for yourself.

All the Superman books coming out right now are great. I don't think you could go wrong picking up any of them. If I had to choose just one it'd probably be All-Star Superman though.

I say buy her Showcase presents Superman 1 and 2 . 1000 pages of her favorite hero without any continuity to bog the neophyte down.

If you are trying to get someone into comics, I don't think All-star Superman is the way to go. It has great stories and should be read, but it is out of continuity and has a slow release schedule. Busiek is doing a great job on Superman and the much anticipated Donner/Johns run on Action Comics coming up are both what I would suggest you start her on. They come out each month and have been real great lately. If you want to get her a collected story like Birthright, I'd say For All Seasons is a good one to go with.

Hmmm... Yeah, you might be right. I was thinking that perhaps Birthright could still be some sort of grounding point.

We'll see what happens next. Several stuff haven't been cleared up yet with Birthright, even Pre-IC.

I'm a new Supes fan as well, and I think you can't go wrong with:

    All Star Superman(5 issues in)
Superman by Busiek and Pacheco(3 issues in)

Superman Confidential is coming up by the awesome Cooke and Sale, look out for that.

I'm a big fan of Superman For All Seasons, and Peace On Earth myself.

I think those would be good for a beginner.

I see what you're saying, but I got my best friend into comics by lending him All-Star Superman. The fact that it's not in-continuity doesn't matter to a new fan (and besides, All-Star's continuity is probably closer to what the average person thinks than the in-continuity titles, anyway), and while the slow release schedule is agonising, it's well worth the wait and the stories mostly stand on their own anyway.

At the moment though, pretty much all the Superman titles are great, as everyone's been saying. I tried Superman/Batman for a few issues and dropped it, and the new JLA has been disappointing, but Superman, Action and All-Star are brilliant.
