    Default Ultimate Power #1 (Spoilers)

    Spoilers ahead, review below...

    spoilers:

The Fantastic Four face off against the Serpent Squad and after an up and down fight scene, a very jumpy ending leads to The Thing losing the middle of his chest... The Serpent Squad are defeated but not without taking Ben's confidence with them calling him a freak... Project Pegasus (presumably a part of S.H.I.E.L.D) clean up the mess but remain very vague about their existence....

Reed feels extremely guilty about Ben and the fact that he caused this to happen, he throws a chair into an N-Zone and upon seeing a ball bearing (?) he has an idea. He makes a proposal at the Triskelion (notably to Fury and Danvers) about sending information balls to the N-Zone and beyond... He is harshly rejected...

Back at the Baxter Building Reed sends the balls anyway and the next morning is feeling himself again as the Fantastic Four discuss the action figures to be made about them, a BOOM at the side of the page and the room is demolished... From an electrical discharge we see...

    THE SQUADRON SUPREME!
    end of spoilers

Well I don't know whether I'm content or dissappointed, maybe a little of both... I suppose sometimes I forget that concept and execution don't always go hand in hand but that sounds much more cynical than it should...

The few mistakes and sloppy bits that I picked up on (Reed is 19 Bendis ) I wasn't too happy with but I suppose everything has to have it's highs and lows. It was a tad jumpy at parts, e.g. how exactly did Ben lose that piece and the BOOM was like the jumpiest page to page ever.

I suspect in the next issue the Squadron Supreme will be taking care of the Fantastic Four setting up for more of the other Ultimate characters to enter. It was a nice issue even with its few shortcomings and I was hugely anticipating it so the fact I'm not completely dissappointed is a good sign, it sets up a story and that's something you just gotta deal with.

I believe I have this issue much earlier than all of you and the ending splash page was expected but extremely eye-catching, almost as good as the Ultimate X-Men final page (which did trump this ;) for those who care).

Nice issue, setting up for nicer issues to come...

[616] A group of villains who have a snake gimmick...

Wiki: The Serpent Society is a fictional organization of snake-themed supervillains in the Marvel Comics universe. The group was initially formed from the membership of a previous supervillain team, the Serpent Squad. The group, like its predecessor, has been made up of longtime antagonists of Captain America and his fellow Avengers.

[Ult] Large-breasted snakes with ambigous sex appeal and semi-one dimensional characters ;) .

No, they were major enemies for Captain America in the 616 universe.

Well, they appear in like, what, six pages? Not really much time to develop for anyone, if you ask me. ;)

OK you have a very valid point, but with lines like "Of course I know who that is it's the FANTASTIC FOUR" you start to assume they're not gonna be the next huge villains :) .

Are you saying that because they're women? SEXIST! :p

Anyways, is it me or does Anaconda and Invisible Woman look like identical twins? Besides the scales.

As with everything in the Marvel U my real question is "When the Hell is this happening in the timeline?" I might be wrong, but when Fury is talking about all of the trouble going on in the Ultimate U there is never any mention of The Liberators. Oh, and he has two arms...I think. Yeah, I know, bionic arm, but still. Wait, nix that he says that "Banner is still out there doing god knows what" So, this happens before Ultimates 2 # 12. Which is good, becasue Ultimates 2 annual happens after #13 but came out before # 12. Way to keep it as non confusing as always. I don't know, Dr.Strange Blood Oath was surprisingly good this week.

I liked it, it had some nice homage elements, particularly the introduction of the idea of the Ultimate Serpent Crown, which for those of you not with us in the 1970s, was involved in multiple dimension hopping storylines, including one with the Squadron Supreme's earth.

The clincher for me was Ultimate Project Pegasus, a nexus of dimension hopping stories from the late 1970s, early 1980s, mostly revolving around the Thing, and the nice tribute of the Gruenwald Doctrine for Mark Gruenwald - Marvel's Master of the Multiverse, and the first appearance of Ultimate Wendell Vaughn, aka 616-Quasar.

Listen, buddy. GreyCloud or whatever your name is. I don't know who you think you are, but let's cut the crap. Even if it's weaving in really cool plot elements as head-nods to decades-loyal readers...

...this is CBR and we don't say anything positive about Bendis!

    (;))
I've got a great idea. How about we keep blaming the other party. Yeah. That's healthy.

I doubt it. This series takes place after Ultimates 3.
