Nope! There were some Barda sketches, but Jack's drawings of Barda were a lot more sensual, alive, dynamic and just plain more sexy.

From the lackadaisical pose, the boring expression, to the absurb dartboard, this is one case where Dave Cockrum just didn't get the character, or the concepts.

Agreed. I like a lot of Cockrum's stuff - his picture of Mantis that Marvel used for the cover of the Celestial Madonna collection is a favourite example - but he missed whatever he was aiming for here.

I may not know what I like, but I do know art (B. MacHine). :p That is one nice Barda pic, Cockrum has out-done himself on this piece. Call it anything you like, because I call it "ART"!;)

I didn't call it anything. I was critiquing Dave's shallow interpretation of a very classic Kirby character. I didn't care much for it back in 1976/77 when I first saw it, and nothing has happened to alter my opinion about it.

He had done much better material in that time frame, including the first time I came across his work in 1970 in Fantastic Fanzine, also published by Gary Groth. The issue was pratically a showcase portfolio, featuring full page pin-ups of new and known characters that demonstrated his skill at costume design. Those also showed a better sensitivity to using poses, viewing angle and the choice of stage props to portray more interesting characters and drama.

If I'm remembering right, that portfolio played a part in his being hired for DC's Junior Bullpen project in 1973.

But sure, we all have our own opinions and that's all fine and dandy.

From as far as I can tell, this is where we differ. In the use of the phrase "call it what you like, I call it art," I only desired to establish my extreme difference of opinion on this piece of art. I meant no disrespect to you or anyone else who shares your opinion.
I most likly saw this piece in the late 70s, but do not recall when or where. When I click on the link in this thread, I was really impressed. To date, this is my favorite Cockrum piece. :D

It's a good picture, but it doesn't look like Big Barda. It also looks less like Cockrum artwork and more like Gulacy artwork.
