    Default Tomb of Dracula DVD

I just bought this DVD - comprised of two animated films about Marvel's Drac and Frankenstein's Monster - off of eBay for a few bucks.

    Has anyone seen them before?

I've never even heard of them. How long is the Frankenstein film?

    Here's the whole description:

Disc #1 - The Tomb of Dracula approx 90mins

    Disc #2 - Frankenstein approx 90 mins

Based on the Marvel comics' series of the same name from the 70s, Tomb of Dracula starts with a band of devil worshippers coming together to desecrate a church and to perform an unholy ceremony to sacrifice a young woman to the prince of darkness. After a lengthy oratory, they wind up not with the dark lord but with Dracula instead. Since none of them knows any better, they think that Dracula really is the right guy and give him the woman, with whom he promptly flies off. However, Dracula is strangely attracted to her and decides to make her his wife rather than his nightly feast. Meanwhile, a young man receives a call from an old weirdo to become a vampire hunter and track Dracula down. He eventually winds up in the search for Dracula, who we find out is actually a pretty decent guy deep down inside. But wait, there's plenty more! Thrill to young Mrs. Dracula's five minute speeches about his goodness at heart! Witness kung-fu battles with old men in wheelchairs fighting martial arts experts with pointy canes! And what other movie do you know of where Satan and God both make guest appearances?
    They were released in 1983.

The Drac one was rather loosely adapted from the "Janus" storyline from the comic. Japanese animation, but some images more or less copied from the original comics art. I don't remember being impressed when I saw it about 20 years ago on VHS, and I doubt it has aged well.

Were these licensed/authorized by Marvel, or just ripped off? (Of course, that's the risk with public domain characters)

I don't know about the Frankenstein film, but I do know that the Tomb of Dracula one was originally meant only for the Japanese market.

In fact I was standing right next to Marv Wolfman at the 1981 San Diego Con when he first discovered that the film existed, and let me tell you what, that was not a happy writer.

The film first showed up here in the US in a version that didn't mention the Marvel roots to the story and had different names for all of the characters except Drac.

I guess that these days Marvel is claiming it and has redubbed it.

On the whole the movie was pretty weak but did have a couple of decent moments.

Also, shortly after the Dracula film, they also produced a Moon Knight anime as well, but so far I have never seen that one surface here in the States.
