Default In retrospect, by comparison is House of M better than Civil War?

I know that a LOT of people were unhappy with House of M as an event, but honestly it has to be unhappy in a different kind of way than how Civil War is lighting the fanbase up.

HoM was a rushed story with pacing issues that resolved itself suddenly at the end (and I'm certain there are other criticisms as well, I've read them for over a year now... lol). But honestly, House of M didn't bastardize the characters the way Civil War is; using Millaristic (get it? heh) dialogue with faux political commentary supplemented with tough guy one liners. I'm not singing the praises of House of M, but in contrast to Civil War it's a work of art.

It's too early to tell to be honest. Civil War is only half way complete.

We're only had 4 issues of Civil War. Many people LOVED the first 4 issues of Infinate Crisis... but after while it feel apart. That could happen with CW, or it could end up getting better.

Eh, I'm a Bendis apologist, and I tought HOM was a solid story, but if marvel doesn't push the reset button before it's over, it's already one of the most significant crossovers they've ever done, and also one of the most lucrative. It's just more important already.

Civil War hasn't ruined a major part of the MU yet.

    YET.

If the SHRA stays in place and we're forced to suffer through everyone being cowed as an agent of SHIELD/clone soldier, then it will be significantly more blowful than House of M, which only ruined a tiny portion of the superhumans that Civil War stands to ruin.

so far I'd say civil war is WAY better then House of M... I liked house of M dont get me wrong but civil war actually makes readers think!!! you can actually debate and argue for either side both have very good arguements for and against them... thats when you know a story is good when theres more to it then just "pretty art", an appearance by a popular character(s), or some supposed "huge changes" we get promised that all the time and very rarely are these "changes" remembered or kept in place for more then a year or two... the real test for both of these stories real relevence will be in 5 years or so... if writers then are still sticking to the ideals of whatever side "wins" civil war, thats when you will know if the series was really a great work of "art" and not a desperate cashgrab to get up to once again buy FAR too many books that all seem to be included in civil war

Actually, Annihilation is better than them both.

But in regards to the actual question, Civil War is better now, four issues in, than was House of M at its like period. It could just be a personal preference thing, but it just seems to me that Civil War is by far the broader of the two, in that there seems to be way more going on there.
    Praise be to Nero's Neptune,
    The Titanic sails at dawn,
    And everybody's shouting,
    "Which Side Are You On?"

And Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot,
    Fighting in the captain's tower,
While calypso singers laugh at them,
    And fishermen hold flowers.
Between the windows of the sea,
    Where lovely mermaids flow,
And nobody has to think too much,
    About Desolation Row.

    Ditto, Annihilation owns them both.

Civil War is more compelling than House of M though, and the art is much better. HoM is more of an epic "Waht If" story (and Bendis really doesn't write epics very well), while CW is a smaller story in terms of scale.

In art, the prize goes to Civil War.

In storytelling, the prize goes to House of M.

    In overall awesomeness, Annihilation KILLS.

If splitting the heroes, making them beat the crap out of each other, and having them act uncharacteristically means that the Earth 616 is changing for the better, sure.

Bringing up Annihilation is cheating, Annihilation is entertaining, it wins no matter what.

I'd say civil war, it has a rather poor plot, but House of M had none whatsoever.

True, Annihilation trumps both House of M and Civil War. It's more coherent and enjoyable a series than either of them.

Civil War's execution has been scattershot, but it started with an intriguing idea and, as noted, isn't over yet, so it's too soon to judge. Meanwhile, House of M was just another game of "let's figure out we're in a divergent timeline and then band together to restore the proper reality!" Nothing new there and it's been done better elsewhere before. And if I've got to go Bendis (House of M) against Millar (Civil War), writer vs. writer, I'll give the nod to Millar, without question, every single time.

I do enjoy Annihilation (despite having a few issues as I am both a Quasar and Galactus fan), but that said it's too early to guage Annihilation too. That's not over yet too. IC as an example... a cross over can start off strong and end week. We just have to wait and see.

HOUSE OF M, mainly because it had a smaller footprint. By which I mean that its crossovers were generally self-contained and if you wanted to skip 'em, you could. If Marvel has to do crossovers, I prefer ones I can partially ignore if I so choose.

    And, yes, ANNIHILATION is love.

-sheesh-. Allow me to help you out here! :) Now in retrospect, how does House of M compare to whats currently being done in Civil War?

I see Civil War as a story with a fantastic initial plot and terrible, terrible execution. In contrast, I see House of M as initially being a plotless "What If?" story that was steered later on for ramifications to Marvel's Mutants. Essentially, House of M tried to make cake out of batter, but Civil War is making mud out of flowers.
