well, i've just finished reading issue #1 of Irredeemable Ant-Man.

    The Good
    - the art (pencils, inks, etc) is top-notch & quite conducive to storytelling
    - as promised, there is a lot going on & very little downtime in the issue
    - there aren't any 100% good or 100% bad characters in the story
    - the lead character isn't as "rotten" as i expected him to be; just a little clueless
    - it was entertaining enough for me to stick around for issue #2
    - plenty of inside SHIELD stuff & an Iron Man spoiler
    - Wolverine scene was *very* brief
    - the Helicarrier makes for a nice backdrop; it's like a hovering college campus/police academy
    - the realistic dialogue
    - etc

    The Bad
    - not enough Ant-man action for me but it's just getting started, so that's understandable
    - more of a warning than a complaint but you'll probably have to reread certain sections (there's a lot going on)
    - the lead character isn't as "rotten' as i expected him to be but there's still time
    - for some reason, the reference to Iron Maniac bothered me (might be because i thought Freedom Ring was a character with potential or that Kirkman referencing his own work in Marvel Team-up reminds me too much of Bendis' writing)
    - not enough info given about Chris and Eric's friendship, yet; they seem more like siblings than buddies.

sorry, i'm no good at reviews. if you want spoilers, just ask.

not much happened but i was entertained/made curious enough to pick it up. it was different, as promised.
I personally thought it was pretty much meh.

blah jokes and just not enough that grabbed my attention...and yes, not enough "happened".

    Is this a mini?

I wonder if this will last more than 10-12 issues...

but it wasn't a review. it's like me commenting about the preview i saw at buzzscope. and any spoilers i would give would be through PMs.

there were jokes? yeah, nothing too exciting happened but i can't say that i was expecting that from the first issue; if it were an established character, maybe. and why would you think it was a mini? and if it does only last 12 issues, i'll proudly collect all 12. Kirkman and Hester are both talented creators.

Okay, SHIELD Tech/History Question: Which SHIELD Helicarriers are we talking about in this particular series?

For one thing, they started naming the darned things as a matter of habit about a decade ago our time. For another, starting with the same Ladronn-drawn issue of Cable that they started giving the 'Carriers names, they started assuming that more than one was "on duty" at any given time(all of which nicely helps explain why different artists give the 'Carrier different visual designs).

I swear, we've got to get SHIELD as a whole its own series again. Or at least an Agent's Orientation Manual.

i have no idea. Dugan was operating aboard this particular one. it's also the one that appeared in the latest issues of Marvel Team-Up, if that helps.

it could happen. isn't there a SHIELD book in the works? for now, i'm sticking with Ant-Man. it's at least showing the SHIELD agents daily routine and downtime (a lot of X-Box apparently).

Considering they run everything from intel analysis to a full lab suite to multiple fighter squadrons off any one of those tubs, I could believe there's an XBox in their rec rooms.

Heck, some of those 'Carriers are shown hosting B-52's. Especially the one that first showed up on-camera when SHIELD was first intro'ed.

PS: My apologies if I seem like I'm rambling. Because I am. :-)

they also have scheduled shuttles down to the city and back. i found that funny for some reason. oh and the XBox, in this case, was in one agent's room and i have a feeling that they'd be considered contraband. i wish they'd clue me in to the scale of the place; like how large is the Helicarrier?

Which brings us back to the question: "Which Helicarrier are we talking about here? There IS more than one in active service, after all."

is there though? i would think that there'd only be room for one above New York, at least. there are probably other Helicarriers positioned around the globe but i think the United States-based one is the one getting the most play right now. i say this because the events of Irredeemable Ant-Man #1 unfold over a good chunk of time. the Helicarrier that Ant-Man is roaming around is the same one in which Iron Maniac was housed, Captain America met with Maria Hill, and Enemy of the State took place. if they have multiple Helicarriers, why did all of those big events occur on one of them? this would have to be the central Helicarriers. it's where the director of SHIELD hangs out unless there's a continuity error.

Just as I thought, Kirkman killed it. This was the most entertaining Marvel book I've read in a long overdue minute. The twist on the final page was nice. Great start to what could potentially be a great series.

i like it because it's not a book that i can easily compare to any of the other current projects out or one's i've read in the past(at a stretch, i'd describe it as Thunderbolts for a younger generation). i can say that it's a good step away from some of the grittier titles out right now, while still dealing with 'mature' matters. i would describe it as 'refreshingly comic booky.' and the main character being a deuchebag didn't bother me, as much as i expected. i'm genuinely interested in his story and where he's going to go after this issue. to anyone ignoring this book because you think an Ant-Man is lame, you're truly cheating yourself. it's obvious that Kirkman, Hester, Parks, and company worked very hard on this title. it definately feels creator-owned.

I was pretty satisfied with this issue. It was a cool start. It was very meaty and packed with content, Phil Hester's art looked as gorgeous as ever, and my favorite part, the main characters are assholes! :D Not cartoonish, completely despeacable jerks, but like real people, who hate their sh*tty job. It's something anyone can relate to. I hope Kirkman doesn't soften them up, because it's really the unique selling point of the series. I also hope there'll be some civil war tie-ins, not only because it'll help with sales(something this book DESPERATELY needs!), but also because it should be really interesting to see this group of losers reacting to all the chaos.

Either way, I'm in for long haul. My only fear is that the book might get canned even before MTU did. Here's hoping all those marvel zombies buyers take a look at this!
