Is it racist of me to state that no self respecting black man is going to jump of perfectly fine airplane? In any case I hope you find the thrill you are looking for and that your jump goes without incident. That said there have been many incident that have occurred to people while skydiving so you may wish to rethink your decision. Then again I know people who have jumped dozens of times and nothing bad ever happened to them. Good luck.

No, but I have two stories to share:

1. One of the first stories I wrote at the weekly newspaper was the tale of a guy who'd gone skydiving for the first time and his chute didn't open. No, he didn't make it.

2. One of my husband's older relatives was a paratrooper. He thought people who actually *choose* to jump out of a plane for fun were insane.

A family member I will never get to meet went bungee jumping and they gave him the wrong cord and, without getting graphic, let's just say he didn't make it. The point is not to frighten you but instill in you a need to go to a very well respected long established school, and company. You are entrusting your life to these people, so make sure they are worthy of safe guarding it.

Thank you but your condolences are not necessarily. I never met the person. I have very big families on both my dad and mom's side of the family. Hell I even have hundreds if not thousands of realities in Iraq I will never meet. Now what would sadden me is if something happens to TC as I know him and have an emotional connection with him.

I was given a sky dive on my 19th birthday as a gift. Since this is your first time I suggest you do a tandem jump. That means that you will be hooked up to an experienced jumper, and will not have to worry about what cord to pull when. This also means that you have an experienced jumper with you with a vested interest in nothing going wrong.

My jump was atypical in that it was twice as high as they normally jump from. What happens is that after being suited up and get on the plane yoou just sit there until you reach the jumping height (or close to it.) You then are hooked ( your back to their front) to the other jumper and you are given instructions on how to position your head and body during the intial part of the jump so that you don't knock the other jumper out when the air resistance hits you and fall to your death. You waddle over to the open door of the plane, and squat, looking down (down, down, down) and waiting for your partner to push the two of you out of the plane (this is when I realized I was kinda afraid of heights.) You free fall for a bit, then you are allowed to move your arms around and fall some more. Your partner then opens the parachute and you experience a REALLY STRONG PULL UPWARDS. You then get to coast down the rest of the way and hopefully land near the landing site. While you may be allowed to move the parachute straps into a seat of sorts, move it back before you land. Also, when you land pull up your legs so that your partner (who is experienced) can do the landing. Otherwise you may break your legs.

On a final note, have a friend drive you up there (with a phone in case of emergencies) and don't book anything for the rest of the day. Once the adrenaline rush wears off you won't be fit to drive, and will most likely lose the rest of the day to naps. You may be a little tired for a day or two afterwards, but at least you'll be able to function.

PS I really enjoyed my dive, but I wouldn't do it again. It was expensive and I learned that I really don't like heights. I'm still happy I did it though.

My husband went skydiving about ten years ago.
He went tandem because we didn't get to the school in time for him to jump by himself. I actually think tandem is the better way to go for your first jump.

I did a tandem jump a couple of years ago, while in New Zealand. This was incredibly fucking stupid of me because I'm actually terrified of heights, but what the hell, I was bored. The worst part was where the instructor to whom I was strapped sat us in the doorway of the plane, dangling over 15,000 ft of thin air, and instructed me to smile at the camera mounted on the wing of the plane. Somehow that was beyond my abilities just then.

A few days later I did a bungee jump. Because I'm stupid. That somehow managed to be even more frightening.

Statisticly you are safe TC as very few paper die each year from skydiving.
