    Default Spider-man calendar: October 1979

Marvel used to put out some pretty neat calendars way back when, and 1979 was the year that they did a calendar dedicated specifically to Spider-man. I kept my calendars, knowing that I could eventually re-use them when the days lined up right. As it happens, the 1979 calendar works perfectly for 2006.

Anyway, I just wanted to share with all of you the cool picture for October in that 1979 Spider-man calendar:

Spider-man has always had one of the best rogues galleries around, and taken together in this shot, they even look kind of scary.

And that's just scratching the surface of his rogue gallery, there's about a dozen more that could show up on similar kind of pin-up shot. Oh, and how is the black haired dude with the cape standing above Mysterio? Don't recognize him.

That looks like Dracula above Mysterio.

Yeah, that's who I thought it might be, wasn't sure though. When did Spidey fight Dracula anyway?

Giant-Size Spider-man #1, in 1974. They may have fought again since then.

Spider-Man's villains are perfect for that October month calendar.

Too true! It was great to see him appear in that recent Sensational Spider-Man arc. He's definitely underused.

I don't think the intent of the picture was to just show Spider-man's rogues gallery. At that time, he had only fought Dracula once, compared to at least a dozen battles with Dr. Octopus. No, this picture was intended to focus on Spider-man's more monstrous looking enemies, to emphasize the Halloween theme for that October page of the calendar.

Also, even though it was a 1979 calendar, there was a chronological progression to the pages of the calendar. Which means that January was about his origin, while September was about the death of Gwen Stacy. So the October picture was his scariest-looking rogues from the first 13-14 years, especially the early to mid 70's.

Good picture, but kind of eerie in a way (just in time for Halloween).
