    Question myspace.com = trouble?

I was cheering before when I heard stories about law enforcement using myspace.com to servile criminals planning their endeavors and arresting them before they commit their crimes. Now it turns out sexual molesters, serial killers, con artists, Australians, and other dregs of society, are using myspace to invisibly gather information and stalk their victims before springing a well planed perfectly executed trap.

Out of of curiosity I went to myspace for the first time ever and sure enough on their web page people include their addresses, photos, and all other personal information that they would never give up in real life. All a person has to do is enter a name and myspace search engine will take care of the rest. It really is a brave new world.

"Do you have a myspace" ? ....God no, why would I ?

Myspace also has this slightly insidious factor (or appearing to be a way) to display how popular you are, the "add me as a friend to your myspace" thing often amuses me.

But you arent my friend, its not like we hang out and go drinking together now is it ?

I guess I just dont get Myspace, other than its clear intended purpose of being a networking tool for people producing media ( I would say art, but, y'know ).

    That and the serial killers.

I will stick with my messsage board accounts I think for interpersonal online relations.

You have to put that information up there though. If you're smart about it all someone will get is your email address and general location. And even then there are ways to limit who can actually see the information.

I use it to keep in touch with my friends from home and college. And my page is set to private so only people i have as friends can view it.

I love myspace as a networking tool and way for me to socialize across country with folks in the comic industry.

But I can see how it could be used for nefarious means.

I googled "martian manhunter avatar" a couple of weeks ago.
    Hit #7 "Young Ethnic Boys"
I'll never get that out of my head.

Myspace changed nothing, gathering info on most people was kinda easy since the invention of the phonebook.

All I'm saying is that I'm worried about people leaving themselves vulnerable to monsters. Generally society has many measures in place to protect people from evil but those measures are circumvented by websites like myspace.com. I want to smack all these kids and tell them to stop acting like they are a celebrity or on a reality show and start thinking about the .1 percent of the population who wish them harm and will gladly do so if they have the information to do it. Information like where you live, what you look like, where you go to school, what your schedule all of which is avable on websites like myspace. Like myself I want these kids to see thirty and regret their youthful stupidity.

I agree, and set mine to private. I also learned that if you blog something you don't want others to read (bosses, potential employess, co-workers, etc.) private mode rocks!!!

The parent blog of mine can be about things I don't mind people reading.

If Cam whores mean what I think it does, I want to retract all of my reservations about myspace.com.:)

I read this post and honestly thought, "Elven cam whores? I've never even SEEN that website."

And I was a little excited, I'll be honest.
