IMO the only differences i see is that modern R&B has replaced the instruments with synthesizers, and 808 drum machines.

to be fair they do play average white band, lisa stansfeild, jon b,remy shand, teena marie, and bobby caldwell.

but i am upset that theres no place for old school hip-hop on today's radio.same as old school rap videos.you have stations like VH1C,and BETJ but they only play old school R&B from the 80's,and 90's but never hiphop.if it wasn't for youtube those hip-hop video might be lost for ever in obscurity.

Don't bet on it. Once your generation reaches a certain age, old school hip hop "oldies" stations WILL appear. This thing runs in 20 year cycles. We haven't reached 20 years for the 1990s. Once we do reach that, you'll be hearing old-school hip hop on "hip hop oldies" channels.

I'm not sure about videos though. But I could see "Classic BET" or something like that, that shows all those De La Soul, Digital Underground, Eazy-E and Kool Moe Dee videos to our heart's content! :p

i'm sure this will happene but hip-hop media outlets seems to have a short attention span.what scares me is that what was made just 5 to 6 years ago are now considered old school, while they pretend that rap didn't exist before 2001. WTF??

    thread necro time....

since hip-hop's popularity is kinda in the shitter, i was thinking this is the perfect time for black rockers to fill that void.i think this could be another opportunity for them to win over the black youth who might be disenfranchised by the current commercial hip-hop/rap...though it'll probably just be another genre for older blacks to complain about.

there's not much i like in terms of new music.. rock started to suck starting sometime in the 80s imo and rap stopped being good once they commercialized it and stopped calling it rap (it's turned into "hip-hop.") now the lines are so blurred (is 50 cent a pop star now?) and new music is starting to all sound the same to me now. i haven't bought a CD since i graduated high school.

maybe it's cause black people don't have rythm, so they don't appreciate rockin'?

this is a joke, entirely a joke. please don't hurt me.

How about this: rock started out as kids (teens) music and a lot of black Americans didn't get the opportunity to be kids, they had to grow up fast because of the socio-economic conditions they were living in. Just like people of our generation in a way get to extend our childhood for years, but our parents, depending on their background, probably had to grow up and face grown-up difficulties and responsibilities at an early age. I now that my parents and my incles and so on - they were pretty much living as adults by the time they were in their late teens. They had to; there was no question of being able to stay in school, you had to get out and work, often even moving away up to the mainland (from Nfld). So I wonder if something similar might be at play here. Black kids having to face the harsh reality of life a little sooner and faster and hence not relating too much to music that was mostly about getting some girl to go to the high-school prom or whatever. And by the time rock began to mature into something that wasn't any longer kids music, the cultural taste had already been formed.
