In addition to what Loren had to say about the taste issue, Trans Fats increase both shelf life and change the amount of refrigeration needed. Also they are significantly cheaper than animal based fats and there is the whole religious/vegetarian issue of using animal fats.

Maybe we should allow adults to decide how they want to eat instead of legislating it.

Yeah, but it isn't, actually. Trans fats are not some sort of recreational life choice - they are an undetectable poison in our food. This is a production method - not a particular product purchase choice. I see this is a big difference - and one the FDA should have been all over awhile ago.

I think everyone's trying to stretch this into being like the smoking bans to whip up support against it - when it actually has very little in common. To me, this is not taking responsbility away from individuals in making their nutritional choices - but rather forcing corporations to take the responsibility to make non-poisonous foods by simply changing their production process.

This is akin to regulating the meat packing industry or banning lead in paint.

Actually, it's EXACTLY like banning lead in paint.

Technically, though, aren't caffeine and alcohol poisons as well? Someone nutritionally smarter than me can answer that, I hope. Really, anything not taken in moderation is "bad for you."

I find the characterization of Trans Fats to be "poison" to be interesting. The studies show that there is an increased incidence of Coronary disease with increased consumption. So, it is unhealthy. So are lots of other things we eat or otherwise ingest, for example, cigarettes. I think characterizing it as poison is rather disingenuous.

There are non-trans fat, non-dairy, vegitarian shortnings available. I use them in my home. Even Cricso, which used to basically be Trans Fat in a can, has a non-Trans Fat formula now that tastes exactly the same.

Maybe we should allow adults to decide how they want to eat instead of legislating it.
Sorry, but just like there are laws for second hand smoke, there should be laws against trans fats.

    Why?

Because nursing mothers who eat foods high in Trans Fats have a higher trans fat content in their breast milk, thus passing it on to the baby.

You're still not getting the point. If I want to eat poison, who has the right to tell me I can't? And if corporations want to give me what I want, while harming no one except possibly myself, who has the right to tell them they can't?
