Default Justice League of America Live-Action Pilot Promo

DECOMMISSIONING THE "JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA"
    by Mark Bell

In 1997, CBS commissioned a live-action Justice League of America pilot, based on the popular DC Comics characters. The trainwreck that followed found its way into the world of comic book adaptation infamy, alongside Corman's Fantastic Four and the Matt Salinger-starring Captain America.

The online "release" of the Aquaman pilot trailer in recent months may've inspired new talks about the viability of that project, but seeing this footage will not inspire much of anything, except perhaps laughs and confusion...

I saw this on a bootleg videotape a couple of years ago.

    Seeing it once was enough!

It's actually quite entertaining in a "so good it's bad" sort of way. If you watch it like how you watch MST3K, it can actually be fun.

There are a few clips of it on You Tube. The Green Lantern effects are surprisingly good.

And Miguel Ferrer as the Weather Wizard!

I'd never seen it before. Taking into account the general state of TV special effects and the less than mainstream acceptance of comic book/superhero stories, it's not nearly as bad as I was expecting.

Ha. I love that it's supposed to be Guy Gardner, too.

I see it when it came out, and if I remember correctly it really wasn't quite as bad as it's cracked up to be. Didn't they try to do it as a kind of comic book comedy-cum-soap opera thing, lots of talking heads bits, with the characters delivering their dialogue straight to the audience? Barry Allen talking about how much his life sucked, and so on? Yeah, I thought it was kind of ok.

I'd love to see them do a series on the Giffen Justice League. Make it geared to comedy and hijinks and you could have a series. Of course Dan Dido would crap his pants because we'd see more people want this type of series if it became a hit.

Yeah, the tv film was an attempt at the Giffen league. It'd be nice if they could give it another go. Things have moved on considerably tv-wise since then, superheroes are big time business now. There's no reason why they shouldn't be able to throw a few more bucks at it this go around, spend a little more effort into getting it just right.
