Default Which to see? Fearless or Protector.

Im off wed and weekdays I go to the last showing of movies on the night before my day off so dont have to worry about being up for work next morning. With no new horror films to see my choices are fearless or protector and I cant quite decide.

Im a huge fan of the kung fu stuff but not so much with newer ones, especially since crouching tiger came out. I like the older stuff like 5 deadly venoms and so on. I dont mind newer ones to much, I just dont like it when they try to give it this big heartfelt, epic feeling. I did enjoy kung fu hustle and it was newer, goofy as it was I enjoyed myself.

And if you give any spoilers please mark them accordingly, I hate knowing stuff before I see it.

    Thanks.

Fearless is a much, much better film overall. Better story, acting etc. Excellent fight scenes, but not a whole lot you've never seen Jet Li do before, action-wise.

Protector's story is...well...pretty much a half-assed set-up for Tony Jaa to do his crazy stunts. If you're a fan of Jaa, he's at his best here. Pretty awesome stuff. If you're a fan of the grittier, old-school Kung-Fu, this is probably the one to go with. Just don't expect much between fight scenes.

Like one poster just said if you want to see a film that not only has martial arts but good acting aswell then see Jet Li's film.

Speaking of Fearless I cant believe that Jet Li's film got beat at the box office by Jackass 2.

    Default See Both

If your a fan of martial arts you have to see both, Tom Yum Goon (Protector) has some of the best fight/action scenes ever. Both are already available on DVD because they are both over a year old.

I expected that would be the case. I really wish I'd been wrong.

    You've got to be kidding...

Anyway, went to see both of them myself. Hmm, Protector is good, but whoever cut it should be shot. And it's brutal in the fight scenes. Fearless is good, but it's not really... it's a story, not a showcase. Though I was slightly shocked at how human they made all the characters.

It was obliterated by Jackass 2, which actually makes me ashamed.

Fearless is subtitled, no? Foreign language films never get the same results as domestic. Jackass played at 3900 theatres, while Fearless only played at 1806. It's kind of sad, but not surprising in the least.

Ha! he did make Tony work for his in the Protector. But if you have a good "China Town"/Chinese district in your area, I'd recommend just picking up both on DVD. They've been out in the Asian market for while now, and for the price you'd pay for a ticket, soda & a small popcorn, you can watch both. I do think Fearless had more of a story/lesson in it, while the Protector was more of a spotfest. And the story? Um.. don't worry about the Protector, you can watch the whole movie in Thai and still get it..

You did mention you didn't care for the 'epic' kung fu movies (which Fearless tries to be); then definitely go w/ Tom Yung Goom ("the Protector" in the US). Tony Jaa does to Muay Thai what Jackie Chan & Jet Li have been doing for WuShu.

In defense of "Fearless"- I consider myself and my friends partially guilty for the so-so box office. Since it has been on DVD (w/ English subtitles, so no worries), we just made it a movie/Tekken 5 night. I'm sure I wasn't the only one who thought of it though..

    I saw protector.

Was that jackie chan he ran into at the airport?

Man that sucked. Was mostly cause of the editing, it was horrible. I feel like I missed alot. Like mark the cop in austrailia one scene he is arrested, then 10 minutes later he pops out of a elevator in the badguys building and shoots someone. Or he is thailand riding boats, then suddenly in a airport for like 45 seconds then suddenly in a taxi in austrailia.

I did however love the fight scenes in the apartment like place where he comes flying in the room and crashes into a henchman and later running up all those stairs where he finds the restaraunt and fighting that black fella in the burning house. The rest were just ok and bit boring.
