    Default Is Sam Raimi insane?

I know CBR isn't a hotbed of Robert Jordan fans. But, the very idea of Goodkind's drivel becoming a film project before Wheel of Time or Martin's ASoIaF is just a travesty.

Reading the header, I was reminded of this exchange from Stephen Sondheim's ASSASSINS:

    Lee Harvey Oswald: You're crazy.

John Wilkes Booth: Maybe I am. So what?

Well, those books are popular, popular gets movies.
Eragon isn't that good, it's getting movies, Da Vinci code wasn't that good, it got movies.
As too how possible it is, i haven't a clue, i'm only 20 pages into Wizards First rule.
But i'm pretty sure it's impossible to do a wheel of time movie...they would have to split each book into 10 movies.

Yeah, WoT is the new standard of impossible that LotR used to be. It will take a writer a very long time to work enough of the story down into doable screenplays. The SoT books are really very movie friendly though. Not too terribly complicated since many problems early in the series are solved by Richard saying, "I go stabby!" :)

Actually, I tend to think any attempt to adapt WoT or ASoIaF would be the greater travesty.

Just because Lord of the Rings turned out well . . .

    Remember Dungeons & Dragons?

Imagine if Game of Thrones or Eye of the World turned out like that.

Be happy with the books, I say.

Man doesn't that movie look bad. Looks like a cheaper version of Lord of the Rings.

Kinda like how the books are a cheaper version of a real fantasy series.
But with some star warsesque bits thrown in.

Yeah I could see some Star Wars stuff there. It does look pretty generic. I remember hearing someone say it was written by some kid when he was 15 which kind of makes sense.

    I agree.

WoT and aSoIaF are both so incredibly dense and intertwined. Whereas SoT is pretty "clean" in comparison. Goodkind has even mentioned his intent for each novel to be able to stand on it's own. That being said, the series has some interesting ideas, and I can see the potential for a strong translation to film.

Somebody is making a book I don't like before a book that I do like!!! How dare they!!! How dare they!!!

    Exactly.

Having got all that out of my system, I think Tom Welling would play a great Richard.

I don't care if somebody wastes time and money making books based on Goodkind's work, but it's a shame that Sam Raimi will be too busy working on this to work on something better for the forseeable future. Maybe Raimi envies what Jackson did with The Lord of the Rings.
