    Default What causes a comedian's career to hit the dumpster?

    I was thinking about Chris Elliot and how funny he was on his tv shows many years ago. What causes a big star like this and others similar to his career to fade into oblivion? Do most comedian's get stale and lose fans? Do comedians just decide they are done with the business? Interested in hearing anyones opinion on any comedian.

    People stop laughing. Sometimes it's because they run out of fresh material, sometimes it's because their personal demons consume them, sometimes it's because the public's taste changes. Every now and then some of them just get tired of the routine, too. A lot of stand up comics are aspiring actors looking for a big break.

    No one that I'm aware, but then he isn't a pretend president, he's "Richard the Lionheart" to Dubya's "Prince John."

    Perhaps Bill Maher? The man who took the art of being a smarmy, self-important, unfunny, douche-bag to a whole new level.
    The Lion banner sways and falls in the horror-haunted gloom;
    A scarlet Dragon rustles by, borne on winds of doom.
    In heaps the shining horsemen lie, where the thrusting lances break,
    And deep in the haunted mountains, the lost, black gods awake.
    Dead hands grope in the shadows, the stars turn pale with fright,
    For this is the Dragon's Hour, the triumph of Fear and Night.

    i dont understand why bill maher is considered funny maybe its just too mean spirited for my tastes.

    i think comedians like most artists start to lose theyre edge when they hit a certain level of comfort and maturity.

    I'd say comedy is like music, either you have to change with the times or your style, no matter how popular, gets old.

    Chris Elliot was never a big star. No one watched Get a Live. Although I'd kill for the box set to come out already. But seriously, Elliot is a character actor who still gets a ton of work, even if he doesn't star.

    Ditto to Buzz Dixon about Beethoven. :) Most classic comedy survives in the way that most classic music does. The audience may dwindle but the relevance of the observations don't go away. Laurel & Hardy films and Buster Keaton are still fun for me.

    I'd say the biggest killer of comedian careers is probably a combination of wanting to be socially relevant (which proves you no longer are) and wanting to be a role model (which tends to prove you never were before).

    Buzz,

    OK, I've googled and wikipedia-ed "Napoleon the 17th," and I'm not finding anything. What's the story here?

    Comedy, like lots of art, is oftentimes motivated by some undercurrent of angst, hardship or just plain hunger(see: Clerks). Take that away (i.e., via wealth and success) and some comedy starts to lose it's edge. (see: Clerks II)
