    Default Sub-Mariner film news

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060914/.../submariner_dc

Eh, could be cool I guess. Not sure why they wanted to get the T3 guy, I wasn't that impressed. Superhero flicks nowadays need a new spin, they're on the verge of being cliched storylines. If they were smart about this, they'd set it WWII.........I think I'd be way more interested in seeing something like that.

All I can thin of is Costner's ill fated Waterworld, and the character Mariner.
This underwater tale needs a reason to be told. I don't think Namor should be a stand alone in a film, maybe have him introduced in an FF flick first.

Default 'Terminator 3' director to make 'Sub-Mariner' movie

    From Yahoo! News

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Terminator 3" director Jonathan Mostow will write and direct "Sub-Mariner," an adaptation of one of Marvel Comics' oldest superheroes.

In the comic, the Sub-Mariner's real name is Prince Namor, a half-man/half-amphibian from the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. An anti-hero, he frequently finds himself helping the human race as much as he fights it when humans pollute the waters.

The Sub-Mariner first appeared in "Marvel Comics" #1 in 1939, when Marvel Comics was known as Timely Comics. He made his first modern appearance in the pages of "Fantastic Four" in the early 1960s.

Universal Pictures' take will see a young man discovering he actually is a prince from Atlantis, with him turning out to be the key man in a brewing war between the underwater world and the modern surface world. Chris Columbus was on board to direct and produce the film in 2004.

Marvel Studios and producer Kevin Misher had long been interested in Mostow, but he was never available. When Mostow's schedule opened up, he called to check whether the character was up for grabs. When he was, Mostow developed a take that found the core of the character, something that had eluded the producers.

"We want to show our first hero, and still most unique hero, in a world that the audience has never seen before," said Kevin Feige, who will oversee the project for Marvel. "But that spectacle will be tempered with character. Our hero is caught between two worlds. That is the heart of the story, and it is that dichotomy that makes him so interesting."

"Sub-Mariner" will mark Mostow's first film since 2003's "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines." His credits include "U-571" and "Breakdown," both of which were for Universal.

I liked U-571, but Breakdown just didn't click with me, and I remember T3 being pretty much panned. It'll be interesting to see what story concept they go with. I'd love to see a WWII period piece, rather than the generic superhero story we've come to expect.

I have to be honest. I don't have a good feeling about this. I just don't see a good Namor movie being made. He doesn't even currently have his on book. Is he even appearing in a team book somewhere? I could be wrong and it could be the greatest movie ever but it does not have the feel of someone going "Oh man this Namor character is great for a movie." It feels more like "We better do a comic book movie, who can we do next....um....I guess Namor."

    Maybe its just me.

I think I saw him in a DC book wearing a black suit with a lighting bolt. Oh wait...

Sounds pretty good. I liked Mostow's take on T3, and it sounds like they really care about capturing the essence of Namor's character. Other than Hulk and Man-Thing, I haven't been disappointed with a Marvel Movie yet. So I'll be there on opening day as usual. Now if only DC could take a page from Marvel and start churning out quality movies instead of dreck like Catwoman and Superman Retreads.

A WWII story would be fantastic!

I don't know a lot about Mostow but I'm actually relieved a bit that Columbus is off.

T3 was as good as it could be given the script and the constraints.

U-571 was OK, Breakdown was one of the best movies of the year when it came out.

I felt T3 was hobbled together. I liked it, but while I wasn't expecting another Cameron piece, I was expecting something, I don't know...better than what I got? In any case, I...not sure Namor is a good idea. I'm iffy about it. But it could be good, or even great. Haven't to wait and see when they pick the guy playing Namor, I suppose.

The idea of Namor having his own film worries me a bit because I think he's a character who's most interesting when he's in conflict with other heroes, blurring the boundaries between protagonist and antagonist. That said, he's probably better off on his own than in the Fantastic Four series.

i think they should disguise it as a film about Atlantis and then use Namor as a lead figure in the movie; sort of like the King and I underwater.

It'd be cool if they went over the top with it. Like Mermen fighting with spears, sea monsters, giant underwater cities. Namor is pretty interesting since he's not really a good guy or bad guy and the fact he's at war with humanity makes for some interesting stories. I say there's potential in Namor.
