Default All-purpose G.I. JOE Movie (live action)

What with Transformers on the horizon (Primus, please let it not suck), what do you think the chances are we could see that other great 80s property hit the silver screen?

I ask mostly because if this:

That's Viggo as Duke, Monica Bellucci as Baroness, and Jennifer Garner as Scarlett. And that'd put my ass in a seat.

    What do you guys think?

The problem is the inherent dichotomy of the product. Transformers are big sci-fi robots. Blowing them up and putting them in bad situations and stuff doesn't matter. Them destroying big things is just a monster trope.

GI Joe is a bit too grounded, maybe. Do you go the cartoon route and have no one die? That won't put many folks in the seats. Having an even somewhat realistic action military flick might be a bit more than a toy company wants, too. So I dunno. When X-Men first came out as a film, I thought that would be the way to do it: start with a somewhat smaller cast, the basics, and have a character you "follow" in.

Still . . .I dunno. It would never be what I want, probably.

Please, all you would need to be happy is Snake Eyes kicking major ass all ninja style.

OK, good point, Trix. Oh, man, that'd be awesome.

I remember old times ago having a GI Joe casting thread at CBR. It was fun.

Still if Jennifer Garner was Scarlett, I would be BEGGING that she goes with Duke not Snake Eyes, Snakes doesn't deserve that.

Well, duh. Ideally they'd actually have a GOOD cast.

And if Greg Horn or Greg Land or any other crappy Greg artist is involved, there will be TEARS.

I hope the odds are 1 in a googleplex. I just have a bad feeling that if anyone tried to do a GIJoe live action they'd screw it up with bad casting, bad writing, bad characterization and scores of cool characters would be left out but the makers of the film would try to stick in some new guy they created called Nosepick, Washout, Trashcan, 2nd Rate, or Whatever.

    Two words: Street Fighter

What seems cool in a video game / cartoon is going to seem dumb and corny in a movie.

I wouldn't count on much of an international market for a GI Joe, and studio execs probably think the same thing.

Thank god for DVDs having different release rights than video, because apparently it never really existed in the former.

Course, the real problem with GI Joe these days is an evil terrorist organization determined to rule the world isn't exactly the quaint thing it was in 1982. That, and the whole not shooting people thing.
