How exactly is her African side being downplayed? Are you referring to her look, or her story?

Not so much petty and vulgar, but well, she's grown up.
She's not the teen she once was. Maybe being in a school setting had more reason for her to use her smarts.

She just seems more shallow to me and less intelligent. Monet's snark always seemed witty and regal. Now it seems much more Emma Frost-like. I don't know if I'm making any sense.

But she is North African. North. That is part of her character. What other character comes from Algerian and is of the Berber ethnicity? Those two 8 years olds copied Monet down to her personality.

She doesn't have the sophistication and classy wit that she had in the GenX books. I miss that - her "above it all" aire. She also doesn't have the dazzling intellect and vocabulary that seemed such an integral part of her character at the time. Someone said she seems more "mature" now. I disagree, I think she seems more petty now and more vulgar.

I can see where you are coming from. In GX it seemed when she was insulting it wasn't in a personal way. It seemed more of a "matter of fact" way. Now she seems to insult to inflict hurt. I think this should be explored. Has something happened that she is acting out in this way. I think this has definite story potential.

Plus, when she did insult she didn't really allow any sort of comeback. That kind of infuriating behavior is what really makes you love to hate her.

i was meaning as part of her look, and being african american wouldnt have diminished her characters uniqueness....not to many of them running round the xmen. yeah the M twins copied her personality, but it was just a copy they couldnt have gotten it prefectly and one of them was autistic, I liked M when she was snobbier, and i like the fact she insults people just to be mean, though her insults have been lacking when someone like jubilee or stacy x isnt around to be really hurt by them.

EDIT: I cant name one single AA mutant right now, so why couldnt M have been black? and i dont want to turn this into a race thing, cause i'll lose but damn, first Synch, then Bishop now they are trying to take away M's damn black apperance......its lame .......LAME

yeah she is kinda different from what she used to be in gen x, even after the twins separated. but then again, PAD can just say well the twins combined were just smarter, so that's a good excuse . my all-time favorite M is still post-Generation next and Gen x 1-10

Honestly who knows it's marvel they probably think we as black comic book fans should be happy that he have 1 living Black American mutant (Storm) in use let along to 2 (Darwin ) or 3/5 (Bishop I think marvel just made him Storm or Stevie Hunter grand kid, Cipher & Cecilia Reyes) in semi use. So they probably think we are over joyed or something. Also viva Synch & PLEASE MARVEL SOME ONE , ANYONE BRING BACK SYNCH.

I was a GenX fan all the way back to the Phalanx Covenant. M was the most interesting of that group. I was glad that Marvel at least put her in one of the X-books (unlike the rest of Gen-X who kept getting killed). But there are just too many questions left unanswered about her family background. Her brother Emplate feeds on mutants (he spawns a legion of Emplates in Bishop's future). She was once trapped by Emplate in the form of Penance. Now she's traded places with her younger sisters (who were impersonating her originally). She takes shopping trips with Siryn, but has no time for this family crisis?

^ now that you've mentioned it... yes hopefully mr. david will touch that aspect of M's life in later issues of x-factor. im planning on buying xfactor again when the issue with her on the cover hits my LCS.
