Gotta say, I agree with the consensus that it's difficult to re-iconise Power Girl's costume, since it's already so distinct and recognisable (at least, recognisable by anyone who knows she exists).
Power Girl's figure presented 2 main problems, and no, the boobs were not one of them. P.G. is usually depicted as having a broad back-and-shoulders and a small torso, which is actually a pretty common figure for many large-breasted women. So whilst the red shrug on the shoulders accentuates the top of her body (and is the closest I came to incorporating her cape into it somehow, see below), the large belt on her hips balances out the silhouette, and the lines along the bodysuit help lengthen the torso. She also seems more of a Summer-colouring girl than a Winter one, so the reds had to be on the warmer side than say, the very Winter-coloured Wonder Woman's cool-red top.
And, sorry boys, the boob window had to go. Yes, in terms of strength, P.G. probably wouldn't experience the back problems most normal women would. But I am always shocked her girls aren't falling out all over the place all the time with the amount of fabric that's missing from her chest. I'm also anti-cape, so instead I brought the red into the shrug & boots, and gave her the closest thing to an iconic logo I could come up with.
The pirate gloves-and-boots also had to go, since the only person who can really pull them off is a heavily mascara'd Johnny Depp, or maybe a bearded Geoffery Rush at a push. I dropped her colour scheme from red-white-and-blue (with gold trimmings) just down to red-and-white (with gold trimmings). One place of inspiration I drew from was the depiction of Krypton in
Superman: Birthright because it's one of the few pieces of canon that actually puts some thought into making the Kryptonian culture and clothing look profoundly
different to what we wear and yet still bearing a close resemblence to the normal outfits of most superheroes.
Which brings us back to P.G. We're led to believe the Supergirls have a profound understanding and connection with Kryptonian culture and life that Superman is lacking, because of the virtual time they spent in their capsules. Knowing this, I always had to ask: "Then why do their costumes suck so damn much!" Okay, P.G.'s costume suits her character and everything, but it's closer in resemblence to a Halloween costume than something we could think of a high-Kryptonian wearing. I understand the need to blend in with your surroundings, but trying to disconnect from that Kryptonian identity would be hard for anyone. I wanted to try and put back some of that identity into her character. I dunno whether I succeeded or not.
I also gave her a haircut, because bobs are
so out.
And yes, I do realise her boobs are a bit on the smallish side, but as a big-breasted woman some of the physics-defying sizes many comic artists draw her with make me cringe in pain. I just couldn't bring myself to draw them like that.
