Thanks bakla! And I'd say "oh I planned that" but I actually never noticed that either! My subconscious must have done that.

Balka, that's just beautiful! I LOVE that costume, and the drawing powers you display are just magnificent. So jealous. Wonderful job.

There were so many amazing designs in the first round as it is, but I think if you had submitted this, I would have probably voted for it! Love it.

    Default Kraken

Thanks for the compliments guys. I always did like creating characters...

So, I've always loved the Phoenix raptor and Manta from the Imperial Guard. I loved the idea of a humanoid character becoming a powerful non-human avatar or form. With that in mind, I figured that at her ultimate level, Nautilus could convert into a purely ectoplasmic mode, and become more powerful. I was originally going to call her Kraken, but thought it sounded unflattering. But she could have a Kraken Mode, and her carapace is designed so that the arms and legs could retract, the visor comes down and covers her face, and her body converts to a squidlike form that has wider reach and manifests more formidably. This is my mech-anime/Transformers side coming through. I always loved those evil Beastfighters (Filipinos will get that one) that transformed mid-battle into something even cooler... Could be an interesting! :)

Not as clean a sketch, but just to get the idea through...

I didn't want to figure out her whole origin, but I wanted her to be slight in form, heavily reliant on her ectoplasmic exoskeleton/tendrils to be formidable. So as far as body type is concerned, I figure she's of Somalian heritage, but maybe raised in the West, like France - very long and lean, and kinda tall, so that her body contrasts the weird carapace of her costume. Her power signature manifests in ectoplasmic tentacles, but she doesn't have enough control over it that she needs her containment suit to concentrate it near her head, closer to her brain and therefore easier for her to mentally control. Otherwise, the energies just leak out of exposed skin. When she isn't actively using her powers, the hood closes over her face in an indigo, translucent glass, and she opens it up to manifest her tendrils.

I'm not sure what those tendrils do - perhaps they can have physicality, like Phoenix's raptor claws, but I also thought they might short circuit synaptic functions, and/or absorb or emit bio-energy. Haven't figured it all out.

But the challenge was just to do an animal themed character, so here she is! I don't love the drawing, but I like how the costume idea turned out...
    That's hot.

I just wouldn't want to be one.

On another note, I think I'm way too influenced by Byrne's Shi'ar armor in this one, so I think she'd make a cool Imperial Guardsman. Or Guardsquid.

Agreed. She especially reminds me of some of Morrison & Quitely's Imperial Guard.

Love the veiny detail on her costume extending just below her carapice. Just little hints of almost-too-organic mixed with the smooth, sexy design to provoke an otherworldly, uneasy feeling.

    *squirm*

Love the idea of the tentacles disrupting synapses. Goes with the hypnotic aspect of cephalopods.

    season 2 challenge 2
Sorry all you Borat Haters, but I had to take Kazakhstan and use the likeness of everyone's favorite foreign correspondant.

Costume, basic spandex. The top blue piece is aromor that allows the National Guard Who Watches and Protects and acts as an Ambassador the abilities of flight and special pulsar blasts, that's why he wears the nifty aviator glasses.

Who he is is classified, what I can tell you is he is part of Kazakhstan's special forces and he also trained with the Olympians of Khazakhstan. Weightlifting, boxing and Greco-Roman wrestling being his area of focus. He was specially selected to defend his country being chosen from border patrols that monitored drugs and kidnapping. Due to negative press the country was receiving along with his protecting duties he was also given diplomatic status across the world to improve upon the besmirched image of his nation.

    Default Hinirang

This is a play along entry by an old friend. Joanne was the inker (she repenciled a few of my frames too) on my Tessa story. It's been over a decade since she's really drawn super-heroes, but back in the day she and I were the closest of friends AND the fiercest of rivals! We used to redesign all the X-men, make our own versions of pages we hated by John Romita Jr, and we basically competed all the time with our illustration skills. I'd say we were always evenly matched!

We've recently been emailing a lot because of my drawing blog, and I always think community is a good way to get back into drawing. Anyhow, this is her character, called Hinirang, based on the Philippine flag:

Here's her initial description (I'll adjust it later, if she sends me an update):

here, finally, my first comic drawing in... maybe 10 years?!!?
i took challenge 2 from cbrunway on symbolism and flags.
    HINIRANG, by Joanne P.
i dont have a name for her yet (currently code named: Hinirang, as in the Philippine word for promise, as in the "promised land," which is what The Philippines is referred to in our national anthem). Her costume is a representation of the Phil flag.

i havent completed her power description, but basically she draws heat and energy from the earth's core. this happens as her feet touch the ground. that's why her body looks like a thermal photograph, where the red becomes bigger as her emotions surge. the "sun" breastplate on her middle is actually implanted in her body. it stores and regulates the energy which she absorbs. the cowl also helps keep the energy and heat intact.

she has another "mode" which happens when she actually uses her power and releases all that energy. in which case she turns all red.
i havent figured out what she'll look like then. also haven't figured out what the 3 stars on her forehead should be doing. i'm thinking her power is linked to a syzygy.

and yes, it is great to save the world in four-inch heels... hehe.
Jo sent me another drawing of her character to add! Nice face!
