    Default samurai movies

do you watch them?? if so which are your favorites, which do you consider must see, which do you still want to see?? recomendations are welcomed.

    my favorites in no order
sanjuro, i like this 1 just a little more than yojimbo. i think because of the ending.

yojimbo, was great mix of humor and violence

sword of doom, love this 1, so dark and i gotta love a movie where the bad guy is plain and simply just so dispicible but nobody can do a damn thing about it. perfect ending for this movie

samurai fiction, very good newer samurai flick, lots of humor and fun and beautifuly shot.

7 samurai, great movie all around, maybe "overrated" by some but that doesn't take away from how good it actually is.

zatoichi, great action and good story i'm speaking of the newer beat takashi version.

    movies i want to see
    original zatoichi
    zatoichi meets yojimbo
    lone wolf and cub

also i once rented this movie called taboo that starred beat takashi, it turned out to be the brokeback mountain of samurai flicks. no offense to anybody but i turned it off once i realized what was going on.
Mr. Backlund continued wrestling under the new gimmick of an out of touch, yet highly dangerous, maniac out to teach the new generation a lesson.[3] He often appeared in business suits, had a hyperactive personality, and used (or, often, misused) large words to sound important. He also demanded that he be addressed as "Mr. Backlund". He would only sign autographs for wrestling fans if they could recite the names of all of the US Presidents in chronological order

Go to the Internet Movie Data Base and do a search for Toshiro Mifune and Akira Kurosawa and you have the best of the best.

Okay, before this thread this is what I knew about Tish, zip, zero, nada.
I now know that Tish is a heavily armed, black, bi-sexual, truck driving woman who likes going to the clubs.

Seven Samurai isn't overrated. Just too goddamn long. Still great. But with a better editor, it would have been genius. Seriously, in a lot of ways, I like to think of Magnificent Seven as Seven Samurai: The Good Parts Version. Basically the same thing, but trimmed to under 2 hours. And with better music, but that's beside the point.

    Yojimbo is great.

    Seven Samurai is decent.

    Zatoichi (newer version) sucked

    Zatoichi's Revenge was pretty sweet

    Sanjuro sucked

SEVEN SAMURAI is one of the few films of any length (i.e., 2 hours plus) with no dead spots. It's not always fast paced action, but it's always compelling viewing. It is a perfect film insofar as one can not add or subtract from it without ruing it.

That's what the film school text tells me. And the dude doing the VO on the Criterion edition. Not sure I believe it.

the length didn't bother me at all, and there's not a whole lot of 2 1/2-3 hour movies that don't bother me.

i forgot to mention the mushashi miyamoto trilogy, i loved the 1st haven't seen the 2nd or 3rd.

13 assassins is pretty damn good, but still can't compare to seven samurai.

The Makai Tensho movies are alright, not the best, but not bad, and they're a different kind of samurai movie from the other stuff getting named. The Hidden Fortress is a great movie, I liked it more than Seven Samurai when I saw it; if you haven't seen it you really should. The Zatoichi Meets the One-Armed Swordsman movie is good, and if you're into Zatoichi then you should really see it; but you should watch some of Jimmy Wang's One-Armed movies first, not that you need to, it's just cooler seeing them meet up that way.

I haven't seen it in like five years, but I remember Samurai Fiction being really good; and for the strangest samurai movie ever I would say you should watch Izo.

I'm not to crazy about Samurai films but ones that I really liked was Sword of Doom, Sword of the Beast, and Kagemusha.

Sword of Doom is just a visually gorgeous film, Sword of the Beast is a pretty tight thriller, and Kagemusha is a nice mix of both.

Ironically my favorite Samurai films are the neo samurai films, and horror films like Kwaidan, Onibaba, Le Samurai, Branded to Kill, and Tokyo Drifter.

Kagemusha has some of the best use of color I think I've seen in a movie, it's like Black Narcissus levels of just crazy beautiful use of color...but it's a long movie, and a slow movie, I don't think I've seen a Kurosawa film that is so content with just taking it's time like Kagemusha is.
