He's a criminologist and, as one person on the science site noted, a forensic scientist.

Neither of which would be of much aid in stopping runaway monorails, unfortunately.

The Simpons quote is from Marge Vs the Monorail, as one of the scienceblogs psoters points out, Batman stopped a runaway monorail (built by his father) in Batman Begins.

So homer was actually quite sensible - and prescient.

Notice that Batman Begins' answer to the topical question is: Batman is a scientist who lets some old scientist that used to work for his dad do all the science work.

Actually, that's the most convincing and realistic answer, if not the funniest.

I don't think Batman can be considered a true scientist, because he doesn't really conduct scientific research. He's certainly skilled in many scientific fields (like chemistry) but he's much more a detective and a mechanic/engineer than a scientist.
