I don't know, I think most of these things are inevitable for comics. I wasn't so much a fan of the time travel (or reality altering powers for that matter), but most of the other examples, I believe, have worked out pretty well in the stories. Even the ones I didn't like so much were really ok with me though.
Really I would say most of those other examples are actually less down to earth than vampires, so I wasn't at all surprised at how they handled the vampire (although I do agree, a more down to earth spin on a vampire wouldn't be bad).
I don't think vampires or gods or any of that mean that they're trying to turn this into the 616. The mystical aspect of this world is still turned down a good bit compared to the 616. I really like the mystic stuff in the world, as long as they don't introduce too much too fast I'm fine with it :D .

Inevitable? Yeah, right. Who can write a good story without time-travel, omniscent mutants, alternate Earths and shapeshifting vampires? They're elemental things for writing a story, right?

Yes inevitable. Saying it is inevitable and saying that it is needed to write a good story are 2 very different things, so try not to put words in my mouth. Inevitable means that no matter what direction the current writers take, if the UU lasts long enough, I guaruntee you, we will eventually see time-traveling mutants, along with an ultimate version of either AoA, or DoFP, or one of those apocolyptic scenarios. And the other stuff has already happened, so whether it was inevitable or not, it's already there, and will be used again. So my advice to you, is get over it, or stop reading comics. These things were all classic elements to the 616 (not to mention all the other mainstream comic lines, which is what this is), which is what inspired everything in the UU, so it's pretty natural to expect most of these things to make it to the UU also. You don't have to like it, but you shouldn't be surprised, or act like a vampire is totally out of place in a comic book with mutants, aliens, zombies, time-travel, and super-powered terrorists.

Yeah, I agree. Hopefully they will make the vampires out to be some kind of virus to make it more realistic. Haha, I know its a comic book and all, but the Ultimate universe was supposed to be more based on our world right?

I wouldn't say it's inevitable. I mean, the Ultimate Universe did great in its beginnings without magic and whatsoever, and there were enough plots and elements to sustain the stories for the UU to last for a loong time without the use of anything too "616".
However, as the writers are seemingly trying to make the UU more like the mainstream universe, I guess I'll just have to put with it.
And I'm not saying vampires are out place. It's everything about the way they present it. They would have made sense in another way, but you gotta admit there's something very wrong with Spider-Man fighting a vampire who morphs into bats and then into a wolf and the wolf just punches him... and there's Blade...
On the contrary, all the alternate universe, zombie, time travel, atlantis thingie fits quite nicely into the UU on UFF, due to the direction of the book and the way Millar presents it. But mythological vampires do no good to USM. Had they been some sort of mutation, disease or whatsoever, maybe. I don't know, anything but what Bendis presented here.

Yeah, I definatley would prefer a different take on vampires. I wouldn't even mind as much if they still had the mythic origins, but were more "normal" vampires, like the ones you see in Blade and Underworld, rather than all the mystical stuff they decided to go with.
But yeah, I still love Dr. Strange, and I think I would have been a little sad if they had made Thor into some whacko nurse with a powered belt. Even Thor in norse mythology, needed his belt for the majority of his strength.. so I'm still glad he's divine :D .

Dude don't they already have vampires in the UU?

See the Ultimate Spidey special, guest starring Ultimate Blade.

Actually, that very secene with vampires on tue USM Super Special is the same one at the beginning of issue 95. It probably wasn't discussed before beacause no one was too sure if the Super Special (and the whole teaming up thingy) was connonical or not, and I don't think many people were able to get it, or just couldn't be bothered (including me). So now that the subject is touched again on USM and it must count, so here we are discussing the way it turned out, which was badly. I hold that Bendis should have gone the Underworld way, or even in Blade they make sense, but this...

Honestly, I'd like to chime in that I like magic in Ultimates Universe. I like it because it's MYSTERIOUS and ALIVE.

Thor being a Norse God in 616 is troublesome because it's not impressive. I have no trouble believing Ultimate Thor is a Norse God because people don't believe him yet his displays of power are subtle as well as mighty. Asgard, wherever it is, is a place that can't really be shown on page. It's a place beyond our conventional understanding of things.

Ditto, Atlantean magic, whatever it is....is scary stuff.

Plus, best arc ever for FF was the Time Travel one with President Thor.
