Default Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Update 5/12/06

Welcome to the 20th edition of the 2006 HR/HM Update.

I'm starting off this week's update with a programming note for next week. I'm headed to Vermont to spread my father's ashes. If you don't see next week's HR/HM Update by Thursday night of next week, you won't see it until at least next Sunday night.

Now that we have that announcement out of the way, let's get on with the news.

    COMINGS & GOINGS

Starting off our version of the transactions notes is the news that guitarist Dave "Brownsound" Baksh has left Sum 41 to form metal band called Brown Brigade. Reportedly the band will have a "classic metal sound."

While he's been missing shows as of late, Opeth drummer Martin Lopez is now officially out of the band. News Link

Drummer Roy Mayorga (ex-Soulfly) is now a full member of Stone Sour. He's been their temporary drummer recently, but has now been promoted.

Buckcherry has signed a deal with Atlantic Records. Full details

Singer Jorn Lande has quit Masterplan. The Story

Snake River Conspiracy has split with singer Martina Axen and rehired Tobey Torres. There's been a bunch of reasons why the split came about flying back and forth between SRC's Jason Slater (who produced Queensryche's Operation:mindcrime II) and Axen. Oh, and here's a pic of Torres.

Here's an update about Iced Earth from guitarist Jon Schaffer. The Link

Exciter vocalist Jacques Belanger has quit the band...again. News Story

Winger has reunited! Kip Winger, Reb Beach, and Rod Morgenstein (keyboardist Paul Taylor is absent) are back together and will release a brand new studio album via Frontiers Records in October. The album will feature cover art from comic artist Ethan Van Sciver.

Contradicting earlier reports that Vicious Rumors drummer Larry Howe had been hired to replace Stet Howland in W.A.S.P., it was announced that the new drummer is actually former Hair of the Dog drummer Mike Dupke.

The replacement for guitarist Darrell Roberts is ex-40 Cycle guitarist Mark Zavon.

If you haven't already I'd recomend getting Something Wicked This Way Comes, as according to Schaffer it seems to be the prologue for the next two albums. Plus it was Matt Barlow era IE's best album.

LACUNA COIL WAS ON KIMMEL? Didn't get a chance to visit Empty Spiral for awhile (on vacation in Sin City), thank God for YouTube!

    Damn, Tobey Torres is fine...

    Best STUDIO album.

If you want to experience Iced Earth at their pinnacle, you've got to get the live album Alive In Athens.

I'm pretty sure Lacuna Coil did another song on Jimmy Kimmel as well. The cover of Depeche Mode's "Enjoy The Silence."

I don't have the link for that, but I'll look.

And yes, Tobey Torres is quite the comely one.

Yeah naturally, but then I don't generally compare studio albums with live ones, totally different beasts. And how can a poor one or even two disk studio album hope to compete with a three disk joygasm like Alive in Athens was?

    New Stone Sour CD? AWESOME!

Life is like music. If it's just on in the background, then it's just noise. However, take the time out to listen to it, and suddenly, it becomes something wonderful.
