    Default Shazam! Captain Marvel Movie.

    http://www.darkhorizons.com/news06/060413j.php

Peter Segal has come aboard to direct "Shazam!" -- an adaptation of a DC Comics' comic book series featuring Captain Marvel -- for New Line Cinema. The comic series focused on young Billy Batson, who becomes the superhero known as Captain Marvel when he utters the magic word "Shazam!" says The Hollywood Reporter.

The name is an acronym for six gods and heroes of the ancient world as well as their attributes: the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles and the speed of Mercury.

Writers on the long-gestating project include William Goldman and Bryan Goluboff. Segal also will produce along with Michael Ewing via their Callahan Filmworks banner.
All I can say is, about damn time.

Now, who plays Billy and Cap?

Naw, I think he's a bit old nowadays or Cap.

I still think Brendan Fraiser would make a good fit, but I imagine there's someone better.

This should be good, but I doubt it will be. Cap needs to get his bearings in the comic book world set before they make a movie of him. Sadly, too few writers really understand what Cap is all about, so I really wouldnt have too high hopes for a movie. Ive liked what Winick has been doing lately, and I absolutley love the Ordway series, but this isnt DC comics, its Hollywood, and that probably spells flop for Shazam.

On the flip, there have been quite a few great fantasy movies in the past few years, most of them starring kids. The Harry Potter series, A series of Unfortuate Events, and the latest Peter Pan have all been quite excellent IMO, and if the studio and writers go in with those in mind, instead of say, Superman Returns I could see this working out pretty well.

I guess Ill just have to wait and see, and if (very big IF ) this actually gets off the ground being cynical wont help much will it? Of course, like I said : This is Hollywood, meaning it cant be trusted to make good decisions. They did put Katie Holmes in Batman Begins, if you know what I mean. ;)

For Billy Batson, you could go with Logan Lerman (Bobby from "Jack and Bobby" on the WB last year, and the upcoming film "Hoot") or Carter Jenkins (Miles from "Surface on NBC this season).

For Captain Marvel, you could go with Tom Welling (how about that for inspired casting?) or Adam Baldwin, or Matthew MacFayden (Mr. Darcy on "Pride and Prejudice").

I dont think a WB teen soap would be the right image for this movie. There are plenty of really good undiscovered kid actors who could do the role, and since he would really have to carry the whole movie, I say looks shouldnt be as important as acting ability.

Also, IMO, Tom Welling is too pretty, Adam Baldwin--well, c'mon, its ADAM BALDWIN, and Macfayden I just dont see it. Of course, I havent seen P&P, so maybe Macfayden could pull it off, and like i said, looks arent as important as acting ability.

Those aren't really much of points. Beyond never make a movie without a solid script, and when you're sure your star won't try to choke out your director. But it has nothing to do with the comics. The Catwoman comic was never better when the movie came out. Whereas the ball being dropped on the X-Men comics is half the reason Joe Quesada is the EIC of Marvel today.

I've been thinking, and their going to have to walk a fine line with Cap.

Basically, the movie has to have some humor, but they have to be very careful not to cross the line of having fun with Cap and making fun of Cap.

Im not saying that a good solid comic is the only criteria for a good comic movie, Im just saying that without a good solid comic there is very little chance that the writers of a movie will get a character right. You were right with MIB and Blade being better than thier comics, and even giving the corresponding comic properties a good basis to work from, but i say that its a fluke, judging by how the rest of the respective franchises did. MIB2 was no, well, MIB. And the Blade trilogy really burned itself out by the middle if part 2. If these movies had better source material to work with, like say the long, rich comic history of X-Men and Spiderman, then these movies probably would have had a better chance at success.

No. Not at all. What matters is the talent of the movie makers and one good story. Raimi based Spider-Man off of a couple issues worth of Ditko and Romita-era Spider-Man. Singer's X-Men seemed more based on the aborted cartoon show pilot than anything else. And when Donner's Superman came out, Clark Kent was a TV anchorman. Whereas DareDevil tried to cram way too many issues into a movie.

Besides, there already is a long, rich history of Captain Marvel. Go read about it.

The most important part is The TONE
    of the story

    It could be wacky
    An Action peice
    A Family movie
    A straigh super hero movie
    Satire
    Etc

multiple ways they can take it. Can succeed or fail either way,

Kurt Angle might be a good part for the Captain if he grew some hair.
