Default If Todd Mcfarlane were to draw Spider-Man again............

I believe Todd Mcfarlane is the most popular artist to have worked on Spider-Man since John Romita Sr (note- I'm not saying he's the best, just the most popular) and his return to a Spider-Man book for twelve or so issues would break Spider-Man sales records for at least the last decade (and make Jim Lee's "Batman" run pitiful by comparison.) Now if he were to return to a Spider-MAn book, what would you guys like to see, and what writer would you want him to be paired with?

    I'll give my choices later.

Since Mcfarlane hates Marvel's gutts and would rather eat dirt then work for them again, if he were to draw Spider-man again that would be the mother of all shocks!!

He would no doubt have to do Amazing Spider-Man and since Mcfarlane is doing the art then Alan Moore is no doubt the writer. :D :p

    i'd cry.

    He can't draw feet.
Comic book fans are a cowardly and superstitious lot. While the fans claim they want change, they tend to react negatively to it.

It's always fun to speculate, and Mcfarlane's current money problems (losing a 15 million dollar lawsuit to the hockey star, losing the Miracleman rights to Gaiman, money in legal fees, etc) may increase his desire to work on a book where he would make an obscene amount of money (probably a page rate akin to Frank Miller on DK2) while increasing his profile within the industry (if he were to follow his Spider-Man with a Spawn run written by an a-list writer, his Spawn book would break the Top five.)

If Mcfarlane were back on Spider-Man, I'd want to make sure the writers don't waste the opportunity, and give Mcfarlane a lot of things to draw (lots of Spider-Man villains, other Marvel heroes, the supporting cast, etc.) For example, I'd rather have six single issue stories with Spider-Man VS the Vulture, Electro, Doctor Octopus, the Hobgoblin, the Fantastic Four, and a new villain, than a six-issue arc (unless it's Spider-Man VS The Sinister Six, that would be acceptable.)

Some writers I wouldn't mind on the book.
Dan Slott- He's an excellent writer, who wrote one of the best Spider-Man stories ever with Spider-Man/ Human Torch. A book like this could help his profile, and his single issue stories would mean that there's more for Mcfarlane to draw.

Mark Millar- He's one of the industry's biggest writers, and his last twelve issue arc featured almost everything to love about Spider-Man, and was pretty much a Spider-Man artist's wet dream. He's written before about how he'd love to come back for a second run, because all of the ideas he's come up with for the character while writing his first epic.

Roger Stern- He's almost universally considered the second best Spider-Man writer (after Stan lee of course) so he'd be the perfect writer for an All-Star Spider-Man type book. It would be wise to have it set while Peter Parker's still single, because Stern's not a fan of married Spider-Man. As for whether a book like this would survive when so many "Untold Tales" series have failed with the character, one need only look at the success of All-Star Batman & Robin/ All-Star Superman, Justice, or the Ultimate books. The one difference between it, and an Ultimate book would be that the events depicted could impact the regular books (ie- a new villain introduced for a storyline may come out of prison for a Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man arc.)

Jeph Loeb- His writing on Jim Lee's Batman wasn't the strongest, but it was the best-selling book of the month, and one reason for this was that Loeb knew what fans wanted Jim Lee to draw. His twelve issues of Batman run included Killer Croc, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, the Huntress, Robin, Nightwing, Superman, Harley Wuinn, the Joker, Ra's Al Ghul, the Riddler, and more (which may be one reason why it was more successful than Azarello's Superman run.) His previous Spider-Man work, the Blue mini-series was enjoyable, especially with the variety of situations he placed Spider-Man in.

There are some qualified writers who I wouldn't want to see on a project like this, such as Straczynci, and Bendis, because I don't see them making the most out of such a rare opportunity. I'd want this to be a story, in which every panel is different, and I don't see them doing that.

This is the perfect example of a storyline which would kick ass, but not be the best use of Mcfarlane's talents (or if you don't believe him to be talented, popularity.)

I have two problems with Micheline.
    1. He hasn't done anything high-profile in years, if not decades.
    2. He was a good Spider-Man writer, but I can think of a lot of better ones.

I'd drop the book. McFarlane is the Satan of the industry. After what he did to Neil Gaiman... I refuse to ever support anthing Todd does.

    What did he do?

I have been reading some of the earlyer Todd McFarlane story's in Astonishing Spiderman (monthly re-print of old storys) and i was wondering the otherday what his style would be like on that now, personly i would give him a couple of books but if the book didnt grab me i would give it a pass.

That reminds me of one thing. Mcfarlane & his writer should be given a new Spider-Man book, mostly to lessen the impact of any latenesses on Mcfarlane's part.
And it'll set a high precendet for whoever follows them.

A court basically ruled that Mcfarlane screwered over Gaiman by...
    A) rescinding on an oral agreement to give Gaiman the rights to the character of Miracleman, and the American reprint rights to the previous work on the character, which Mcfarlane bought from Eclipse books.
    B) not paying Gaiman what he was owed for the reprint rights to Spawn #9, Angela mini series, and the later use of the characters Gaiman invented (Medieval Spawn, Angela.)

Erik Larsen did a decent parody of the latter with Savage Dragon facing new villains, including Medieval Sandman who describes himself as "an original, non-derivative character," and the Ultimate Arachnis (has a Harry Potter accent, and love of whining.)

I don't know enough about the lawsuit to make any moral judgements on who was right or who was wrong...
I'll continue to buy almost anything Gaiman writes.
I'll buy something Mcfarlane draws if I like the writer.

I'd like to note that one of the Image founders returned to an a-list book for a four issue stint (Mark Silvestri's New X-men), and that Mcfarlane helped out with Marvel's Heroes September Eleven tribute book (Queseda even inked his image.)

Mcfarlane needs to be doing something other than leeching off his franchises that he has little to do with anymore, he reminds me of Tony Hawk, or Tom Clancy.

Fact is, is he has found more success elsewhere while being in control and not being a grunt. Artists, from what I know, never have that much pull in a comic book company. Of course, my knowledge is limited on such things.

Blue is my favorite Spider-man story and it would be awesome to see him and McFarlane.

I agree with that too. Those stories were awesome and fun!

Another writer I've liked him with was Mike Barr (Batman Year Two: Fear The Reaper). He might be fun to add to darken some villians or even heroes up.

I think anything Todd would do would have to be with lots of characters and MJ. I would love to see them bring him back then a bunch of classic characters like Doc Ock, Mysterio, Electro, and so on. Heck, seeing him do a Sinister Six arc with almost anybody like Hobgoblin, Electro, Doc Ock, Mysterio, Chamelon, Beetle, Venom, or maybe a new villian would be awesome. Some things I would hope they he would do with whoever he writes with:
    A)Fix Venom.
B)Make the classic villians a threat and good again.
    C)Make Electro freaking awesome again.
    D)Have a strong MJ again.
E)Fix all these ID leaks and not have anymore that are random and pointless.

If Todd McFarlane ever drew Spider-man again, I think it would really help Marvel,Spidey, and Todd out A LOT!

I would love to see Vaughn, who I think would be golden on a Spiderman book, write for Mcfarlane. That would be worth buying for me.

Not to be argumentative, but while I do agree that Mcfarlane was one of the most succesful creators on Spidey in the last decade, I also think that Erik Larson was equal in quality if not hype.

Two guys that clearly loved what they were doing at the time, or at least seemed to be.
