    Default Life On Mars

This is a new cop show which started last night here in the UK, and it's rather wonderful.

    Here's a quick synopsis.

John Simm stars as Sam Tyler, a driven and ambitious young detective, determined to keep the streets of 21st Century Manchester safe. But after a near fatal car accident, he wakes up, dazed and confused, in 1973. Has he gone back in time? Is he in a coma? Or has he simply gone insane?

Not obviously science fiction (there's suggestions it might be), but it's well filmed (there's a lovely difference in filming techniques between the 2006 scenes and 1973 scenes which makes the 73 stuff look like The Sweeney), well acted and a huge break from the formulaic rubbish we're used to.

Worth searching for and giving it a look.

I totally agree, a well acted, directed and written piece of genre tv, what with this and Doctor Who something really weird is going on at the BBC at the moment!

Do you think the BBC have sudddenly woken up and realised that making decent programes instead of third rate reality shows will get more viewers?

Looks like the series will end naturally.

Good, i'd hate it to grind on and on.

Sadly a US version is coming...

Man, just two seasons? Well, at least we're getting an ending. I wish we had gotten a better ending when Red Cap was cancelled after 2 seasons.

I'm not big on adaptations, but it's being done by DEK. That means it's probably going to be pretty good.

Unless it lasts longer than 2-3 seasons and then it suffers a slow agonizing death from David E. Kelley Disease.

2 seasons seems just right. Seeing it grind on and on would spoil the idea. Also Simm was only signed to two seasons and the show wouldn't work without him.

I do like it having a finite ending but I thought we'd get at least 3 seasons

There's going to be a spin off series.

The Torchwood formula has prompted a similar experiment with Spooks, the BBC One drama. Rogue Spooks will feature young MI5 recruits. The next show to give audiences a sense of déjà vu will be Life on Mars, which stars John Simm as Sam Tyler, a detective who is catapulted back to 1973 after a road accident.

BBC One has commissioned a sequel starring Philip Glenister, who plays hard-drinking Detective Chief Inspector Gene Hunt. Provisionally titled Ashes to Ashes, the action picks up the characters in 1981, for a series that the BBC calls “More Miami Vice than The Sweeney”.

Couldn't it just be the dream continued in some way?

Not really, as said it could be part of the same dream and as yet there's no confirmation whether John Simm will play any part. The second series starts soon so we'll probably have a better idea once that starts.

We just started getting this series in Canada, and it's pretty damn good so far.
