Hello Mr. Brevoort and company,
I had a couple of questions regarding recent comic events in the Marvel Universe. First, Marvel has a lot of balls rolling throughout the rest of the year. Fear Itself, Avengers: Children's Crusade, Spider-Island, X-Men Schism, Vengence, and FF War of the Four Cities are all happening, with several, if not all, of these major stories ending before 2012. Was it the intent of Marvel editorial to have all this going on around the same time? Or, was it meant to give readers multiple events to pick and choose? Or is it just a big coincidence?
Also, and I know it may be two soon to ask, are there any new series planned to debut after Fear Itself? Events in titles like the Home Front, the Deep, and Youth in Revolt seem like great opportunities to bring back dormant or lapsed MU characters and teams after FI is all said and done.
I wanted to ask about continuity. I was reading over in the DC forum, and one poster thought it'd be a good idea to drop it. He's for continuity when it came to one title, but he was okay with other titles having differing histories.
I know this poster was talking about DC, and he only mentioned Marvel once, but what's your opinion when it comes to continuity? Is it really neccessary? (My opinion: yes, yes it is)
DC has just announced six female solo books, plus the latest iteration of their all-female team "Birds of Prey." Currently Marvel's only female-lead title is "X-23."
My wife and I are both sitting here wondering - where are Marvel's superheroines? Weren't we just celebrating them last year?
Hi
In the past years " Uncanny " has been the flagship title of the X Men.
When "Schism" ends which X title will be the "go to" book to read?
Hi Tom,
Seeing Steve Kurth's name attached to a string of issues to come later this year on X-Men Legacy led me to think about some of his past Marvel related work. It has been 3 years now since Newuniversal Shockfront was last published with issue #2. Does Marvel or Warren Ellis plan to finish this series out to completion, or should I just do the sensible thing and drop any shred of hope that it will one day resume? It's just that I found Newuniversal to be a great story and just hate to see it go unfinished.
Hi Tom,
In light of recent events in comics there are a few things I've been wondering about lately.
1) With Gary Cody and the Unity Party coming into power in the latest Alpha Flight series and Jameson becoming mayor in Amazing Spider-Man, I was thinking about Marvel's portrayal of the US President and how it consistently matches reality. I was wondering if there is a policy on noted political positions where the line is drawn on whether it's a fictional character or the real world equivalent.
2) While I appreciate Marvel's efforts to portray Spider-Man as a younger man while not ignoring the character's history or age, doesn't that effort seem to get contradicted in situations where you have interactions with a similar but younger character like Spider-Girl or even more so having Spidey substitute teach at Avengers Academy?
3) In light of the upcoming relaunch of the DC Universe, has the staff at Marvel considered the effects of a line wide relaunch? What would be the pros and cons of such an effort? How valuable is it to have all versions of a character relatively consistent by comparison to honouring their history in drawing new readers?
Thanks in advance if any of these questions are discussed in the column.
Hi Tom,
I was wondering if the Young Avengers are going to get a regular ongoing after Children Crusade ends?
Also, will some of these FI tie-ins like the team Cho is setting up in Home Front or Youth in Revolt lead to new ongoings?
Finally, Are we going to see more of the New X-men doing stuff post Schism? I really think some like Prodigy could be put to better use. I mean seriously your own databooks give him a 6 in Intelligence which makes him smarter then all of X-club and yet he never solves a science problem.
Hello administrators, editorial, creators,
Please let me know what role Pixie will play in the upcoming Schism mega-event and onwards...
Thanks
There's been a lot of talk on the forum over whether the new Spider-Man is a guy or girl. I know it's a pretty ridiculous question, but I'd like something to show them that it's a new character, and male.
Hey tom, i just wanted to know if the new Ultimates Series was going to be a regular ongoing series or another Mini series like the previous series have been?
I have never quite understood the point of re-starting the series over and over again, and i wish to get a proper on going series this time thank you.
Hey Tom, I enjoy reading your interviews every week. Anyhow, a lot of us on CBR are big fans of trades- would it be possible one week to have someone from the trade department field our questions?
Hey Tom, just wondering what Nick Fury's status in the MU will be after Secret Warriors wraps up. I keep seeing him in other titles looking all professional-like. Is he set to be part of some UN organization or otherwise?
Hi,
1) There seems to be fewer and fewer prominent female characters every month. They die (Phyla-Vell, Omega Sentinel, Mystique, Wasp, Jean Grey), get sidelined (Scarlet Witch, Karma), fall from grace (Vindicator?), or are generally underutilized and under-characterized (Spider-Woman, Mockingbird, Ms. Marvel, Storm, Pixie, Magik, Black Cat). With Incredible Hulks ending, the She-Hulks will presumably be out of commission for a while. And there's only a single solo book featuring a female protagonist (X-23, which is awesome by the way). And Hope and Dani Moonstar are the only current female leaders I can think of (thank you, X-Universe!).
I don't know if it's actually getting worse or if I'm only noticing it more now. I realize that male characters have often been more prominent in this medium, but these are less and less the comics I want to read. Any chance of seeing more diversity and equality in characterization in more than just a handful of ongoing titles?
2) And aside from Ms. Liu, why aren't there more female writers and artists on ongoing titles? Kathryn Immonen, Kelly Sue DeConnick, Sara Pichelli, and others have more than proven their skills to me, the reader. I'd love to see them all on regular titles. (Whether on male or female characters.) Even stepping up as Marvel Architects. Any chance of seeing more variety in voice and style in ongoing titles?
Thanks!
Scott Gable
