Great
Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk
Ultimate Human
Good
Ultimate Armor Wars

I think there are 4 main options:

Anthony the Tumor - When we see Reed operating on Tony's brain does he remove and befirend the tumor only to kill Tony?

Future Ben - If Kang turns out to be Future Sue then could this be Future depowered Ben in his Iron Man suit?

Robbie the Robot - If Kang turns out to be Rhona Burchill then is this the latest incarnation of her sidekick Robbie the Robot?

Tony Stark - When we see Reed operating on Tony's brain does he remove and kill the tumor and persuade Tony to join his team?

My vote is for Robbie the Robot although I am also getting an increasing feeling that Kang might be Future Sue

Will the new arc of the Ultimates involve time travel?

So we've been seeing a bit of Kang recently in the UU and if you're not aware that particular character and all his incarnations are linked heavily with time travel. We have also seen that time travel is very possible in the UU since both the UFF and the X-Men have experienced it. I am thinking that we may see Reed Richards and his crew trying to travel through time for some nefarious reasons in Fialkov's upcoming arc. There are a few obvious reasons they could be doing this, 1) Reed wants to manipulate the time line so he and Sue can still be together, 2) Reed has regrown his conscious and feels pretty bad for taking a dump all over Europe 3) Reed and pals have decided that the world would be better off if the "superhuman" had never been around so he tries to stop whoever/whatever the first super hero project was.

Here is where I start stretching to connect some dots. In UC: Wolverine we learn that Project Mothervine is what created mutants in the first place. It is the "primordial chimeric dna" that all mutants are derived from. In the last arc of UXM before Ultimatum we learned about Banshee, a drug that made normal humans mutants and turned mutants into mega mutants. We also learned that Banshee was basically people mainlining Wolverine (the original, not his poorly dressed son). So this made me think that maybe Mothervine and Banshee are the same thing we just haven't been told explicitly yet. So right now you are probably saying wtf does mothervine have to do with time travel Wolverine12? Well if the UU stands by Wolverine being the first mutant and Richards group are going gallivanting through time to suppress or screw with superheroes than I'm sure Logan is probably one of the stops they are planning on making, basically to stop mothervine from ever coming into existence.

Why else would Kang show up at the end of this comic? Sure it's a nice little set up for the next arc of the Ultimates, but if it doesn't connect to the UC: Wolverine story than that is basically saying that Cullen Bunn ran out of ideas on how to end his mini series so he just decide to play up a a different book in the UU line. Not completely unbelievable but it feels more like it is tying into a bigger picture. Besides we've seen Quicksilver in the promo pages so showing Kang with him isn't really shocking.

Another small tid bit that makes me think that there will be time travel is some recent comments I posted from, I believe, Tom Breevport. He was asked about the dead means dead policy in the UU and his response wasn't the usual "yes, quit asking me that Wolverine12" it was "we are trying right now to stick to that" or something along those lines. Again I know it's stretching but why not just say yes if the rule is still in place for the foreseeable future? We already know that they will make exceptions to the rule, just ask Gwen Stacy. Sure it's not the "original" Gwen but she is the exact same person down to the last molecule and you can take that to the bank because Tony Stark says so. So bringing characters into the present via time travel wouldn't actually be reviving anyone because of alternating time lines or some other reason that will suffice enough that a time displaced Cyclops would still be able to go dig up his own dead body and see the extra hole in his head.

Finally, we have been getting teased that an Ultimate must die to save the world and he's not happy about it. What if it's not someone from today, what if an Ultimate from the past has to die to prevent some mind blowingly horrific event from happening in the future? Or what if a current Ultimate dies but Cap says "hell no, not on my watch" so they go back to save whoever it is that bites the bullet.

Just a long worded thought I had today after I finished UC: Wolverine

The finale of Bunn's exploration into the world's most famous mutant and his son is out today! What's up with Mothervine? And will we see a final showdown between Pietro and Jimmy? And what does all this mean for the future of the UU? FIND OUT TODAY!

spoilers:

YEARS AGO
-In Calcutta, Wolverine hunts down Magda to retrieve the Mothervine sample she stole.
-She's just given birth, and reveals that she injected herself while she was pregnant in order to smuggle the sample.
-She and Logan decide that he should keep the baby and gives him a drive with Mothervine info on it.
-Logan stabs her so his team follows her and he goes AWOL.
-He takes the baby to James and Heather Hudson in Florida.

PRESENT
-Jimmy and Blackbox fight Quicksilver at the facility.
-Magda shows up and shoots them both, ending the fight.
-Back at Utopia, Jimmy and Blackbox recover, and Jimmy calls himself Wolverine, holding the costume from the cover of UXM #1.
-Quicksilver wakes up in a hospital to the presence of a Kang-looking female.
-She-Kang says she needs his help.

THE END! To be continued in Ultimates Disassembled...

end of spoilers

If you've been around for the past few months, you know I've been a fan of this mini. I think Bunn is really knocking it out of the park with this, filling in Jimmy's backstory while also building towards new things. This issue wasn't really heavy on story, but it was a great ending.

It's been clear from the beginning that Bunn really gets these characters. Jimmy and Quicksilver are definitely my favorites here, as their relationship is very fun to watch. His Logan is good too, though he doesn't get much focus in this issue. And Magda has been a great addition to the UU (his version, at least, as she is much different from the Ultimates 3 flashback), especially as it looks like she may not be gone. The highlight of the dialogue in this finale was definitely the showdown between Jimmy and Pietro, but I also liked Magda's conversation with Logan. The sentimental Wolverine at the end was nice to see, too. In fact, the only misstep for me was the awkward start to the fight, where Blackbox and Jimmy lure Pietro out. I wish Blackbox would have gotten more page time, too. Beyond the dialogue, I liked the character progression for Jimmy a lot, as he differentiates himself from Logan, but also accepts his legacy. It's a character move that's needed to happen for a few years now, and I'm glad it finally did (though Wood has also been writing Jimmy very well, of course).

In the art department, this is the best Messina's art has looked yet. I'm still not crazy about it, but it's getting better. Even though it comes mid-series, I like his new Quicksilver design (which may have been Fialkov or Di Giandomenico's doing). The action isn't quite as strong as it's been in a few of the other issues, but the sequence of Quicksilver running with Jimmy was outstanding (and evoked a fond memory of Hitch's Quicksilver vs Hurricane in Ultimates 2). I think Messina is going to do great things as his career continues.

As I mentioned earlier, there isn't a ton of story here, but what we got was good. Bunn revealed (or at least implied) that it was Mothervine which gives Jimmy his metal-coating powers, and expands that to show that Jimmy can evolve in more ways, as his teeth go feral to bite Pietro. And of course, the tease for Ultimates Disassembled was fantastic; I was certainly not expecting to see She-Kang. Somehow, it's gotten me even MORE excited for Fialkov's Ultimates (21 days!!!). And since we know Magda survived, I'm adding her to the speculation for She-Kang - Future Magda. I also liked the final bit, as Jimmy accepts his identity as Wolverine, but I REALLY hope he never puts on that costume. I would have worked at the beginning of Spencer's run, when he was still a naive superhero, but it really doesn't gel with what's going on in Wood's UXM.

So there's no big bang in the conclusion, but everything is wrapped up very nicely, with a few teases to the future. And unlike the ending to Edmonson's Iron Man mini, we KNOW we'll be seeing the tease followed up soon (and I really hope Edmonson gets a sequel...). Although I should note that it looks like this actually takes place a few arcs back in Ultimate X-Men, as Utopia still looks like a desert, so it's doubtful that we'll see a direct continuation in Wood's UXM (though there has already been a Mothervine reference). And on that note, if Wood does end up leaving (I hope not!) I would be happy with Cullen Bunn taking over. He's done a great job here, and I think I'd really like to see him write Kitty/Jimmy.

Ratings:

Writing: 9/10
Story: 7/10
Art: 7/10
Overall: 8/10

Final verdict:

This is a great finale to a solid mini. It not only expands on the titular character, it also builds for the Ultimate Universe. In my book, that makes a great Ultimate story. Wolverine and Ultimate fans alike should be pleased.

We know from the preview of Ultimates #25 that the gems are the "white blood cells" of the Universe, each one being created out of a major event. Sue mentions four events specifically:

- Ultimatum
- Sinking of Atlantis
- Ragnarok
- First contact with Asgard

We also know from Ultimates #22 that there are eight (or more) gems; I'm going to stick with 8 for now. So, assuming Sue was correct and not just speculating, what are the other 4 major events? It would seem that they are Universe threatening (Ultimatum) or world changing (first contact with Asgard), so I wouldn't think that something like Peter's death would cause a new gem to be created. It was a big deal for readers, not a huge deal as far as the in-comics Universe is concerned. But hey - it's possible. So what are your guesses/speculations? Mine are:

-Coming of Galactus
-First contact with aliens (I believe it was the Chitauri in the 1700s); I only put this because I figure if Asgard made it, so would aliens
-Phoenix vs Apocalypse
-First Mutant born

Other candidates include: Discovery of the N-Zone, Creation of Captain America (not a bad thing, but a big one), Reed builds the City, Reed's attack on Washington

I like the idea of them being more spread out, which I think my list does a pretty good job of. The timeline would look about like this:

21,000 years ago - Sinking of Atlantis (going off wikipedia for 616; Ultimate may be a bit different)
Long ago - Ragnarok (I don't remember if Loki ever gives a time for how long he was in the Room Without Doors, so this could go about anywhere)
Long ago - First contact with Asgard (Same as above)
300 years ago - First contact with aliens
70 years ago - Wolverine becomes first Mutant
2 years ago - Galactus
1.5 years ago - Apocalypse
1.5 years ago - Ultimatum

Obviously, the events start happening exponentially more often, but it still represents a map through history.

spoilers:

-A year later, Miles still isn't Spider-man.
-He has a new girlfriend, Katie Bishop.
-Miles wants to tell her about Spider-man, Ganke says he shouldn't.
-Spider-woman tries to get him to come back, he says no.
-Miles goes out to dinner with his dad, and they run into Gwen.
-There's an explosion at the restaurant - outside, Bombshell is fighting Cloak and Dagger.

To be continued...

end of spoilers

When Venom Wars didn't bring USM back up to the level I was hoping it would, I thought "maybe this time jump is what Bendis needs." I've been feeling like his USM work has been overall uninspired since the end of #12, and thought this would give a fresh start. But I'm not so sure yet.

I'll say this much - I think the time jump was perfectly handled. Just like the 6-month jump after Ultimatum, we start in the middle of the story, no explanation how we got here. I like that. We finally get to meet this mysterious girl who we've seen glimpses of, and it turns out she's Kate Bishop (of Young Avengers fame, in 616). We don't get to see much of her, but I think she's going to be a cool character, and a much needed addition to the cast. To that extent, Ganke is still solid as ever, a great supporting character. Really, the characterization in this book is mostly solid - everyone around Miles represents a slightly different side of this Spidey/No-Spidey dilemma, and it all makes sense. The only character who I wasn't feeling was Jefferson, who comes off as greedy when discussing the likely payout.

So from a story side, all the characters are great. I get why Miles has hung up the webs and why Ganke thinks he should put them back on. And obviously, Jessica and Gwen make sense as well in their reasonings. The problem with the writing though, is the dialogue. Man... it's rough, some of the worst I've seen from Bendis in a while. The "Lego" pages were painful to read. Two pages of Ganke whining over and over again about the Legos. I don't mind it from a character standpoint, but that's so much wasted space. I really think Bendis should write for TV, because this style of dialogue works MUCH better when spoken than when written. Since you can't do much for comedic timing in print, this whole double-speak repetition thing comes off as stale and forced. The other line that really bugged me was "You haven't told Katie Bishop you love her yet?" Why, other than fan service, does Ganke need to say her whole name? It read as if Bendis was just shouting "LOOK GUYS IT'S KATIE BISHOP!" Ganke would just call her Katie. Now, Miles could have said to his dad "her name is Katie Bishop," and it would have felt natural while accomplishing the same thing. Also, the text message thing is still awful. But this is becoming a rant, so I'll just let it go for now.

The art, though - holy crap, it was great. Marquez just keeps getting better and better. You can actually tell that Miles is slightly older, which is cool. I also really like the design for Katie, though it seems like every girl in this book has had this same faux-goth look for the past few years (MJ, Kitty, Gwen, and now Katie). The Cloak and Dagger page was fantastic as well. If nothing else, this book will continue looking great.

Like I said, I think the story and character beats here are really good. I just wish the dialogue wasn't so Bendis-y. This is easily the best plotted issue of USM in a long time (other than maybe #16.1). Fortunately, the balance still lies in the favor of the good story here; a weaker story and the dialogue would ruin it. As long as the story remains this strong, this book can only get better.

Ratings:

Writing - 6/10
Story - 9/10
Art - 9/10
Overall - 8/10

Final Verdit:

This is a great jumping on point for new or lapsed readers. There's not a lot going on, but it's a solid character issue. If you've been wanting to check this book out - do it now.

Long story short. I have been noticing a lack of character drama in Ultimates which in my opinion was what made Millar's Ultimates unique. Grounded interactions between the teammates as well as the people of America themselves. There has been too much of what I consider just battle after battle and then moving on. Loeb, Hickman, and Humphries have been somewhat complicit with this. Which do you prefer? Ultimates Drama? or Ultimates Assignment? Also what do you think is missing from the Ultimates?
