Back a few years ago I was a comic/card collector. I'd find the Topps/Upperdeck and various other card sets and buy them when I had chances too. I always made sure I got the 1st edition .
Part of me loves cards from the moment I started. In 1990 I made damn sure to go all out and plead to get a package of 1989 Topps each supermarket visit.
For 2 dollars my mom would buy me them and I'd look thru my cards. Of course I wasn't a huge NFL Fan til about 2 years later. Its then where I started my card collecting in earnest. I started with Upperdeck and Topps and stayed. Fleer,All-Pro and Sky-Box sometimes. But Upperdeck and Topps were it for me.
In 1994 I finally organized and put my cards up into holders. It shocked me at what I had. And I started persueing cards for the Rookies.
I had nearly the entire early 1990's Dallas Rookie cards. Aikman , Smith , Harper....ect ect. I then focused my efforts to collect all rookies. JJ Stokes , Peyton Manning , Drew Bledsoe....it didn't matter. I would get thier damn rookies!
But as my love started growing...so did the price. By 1997 my frustration had reached its boiling point. I bought a pack of Upperdeck and found 6 cards....6 Fuckin cards. The price....2 bucks and half. I made a vow that day. No more Football cards. So after 6 years my Football card collection ended.
I would browse. Sometimes I'd pay 20 cents for a card here and there. One day I bought another Peyton Manning rookie for a buck. Or I'd spend a quarter and buy a Steve Grogan rookie. Thats right...I bought the old New England Patriots QB from 1975-1991 for pretty much nostalgia. I played with New England on Tecmo Football on the NES a lot.
But what made me hate collecting even more was what I saw on 20/20 a few years back. 2 Morons get into collecting cards and think thier gonna cash in on fortune. Instead of taking it easy Moron A and Moron B let thier drive to collect ruin them.
By the end both are crying that thier card rush was like a gambling addiction or alcohol addiction. Thats right...but this doesn't end. Moron A and Moron B decide that even though they are the ones who choose to pay 100 bucks for a set of Topps from 1982 , that they should sue the Football Card companies. Yes...and I nearly wanted to toss my fist thru the TV.
I quit when the price became extreme and out there. But these guys stayed and tried to sue. And the last I heard they were getting an actual court hearing. No word if Upper Deck or Topps will be forced to pay these guys.
So anyone else collect cards here...and if ya still do ..is it fun ? Or have you quit ?
