in what sense? in terms of who practices the hardest? who plays the most consistent and tenacious d? who puts in the absolute best effort in every single game they play in?

I really don't follow Basketball. But I heard Allen Iverson plays banged up to hell all the time. That he usually plays with a banged up body for most seasons.

In terms of Football players....thats easy..its Brett Favre. He's had bad ribs, near broken fingers and bad knees. Anyone that can start 200+ games gets my nod.

In terms of intensity in game, its hard to argue with Iverson, who not only consistently plays (and excels) with injuries that would make another player stick to the bench, but is also utterly fearless, taking it to guys twice the size of himself on play after play, going to the floor, hard, like 10 times a game, and never complaining. However, in the past he's been somewhat flaky about practice, and while he's a good defender for his size, he's by no means the sort of tenacious defender you would expect for "most dedicated player".

Favre is awesome, but another guy who really deserves some sort of nod for his incredible dedication and work ethic has to be Jerome Bettis. I have never seen the Bus back down or out, no matter the odds, and he gives his all every single play of every single game, no matter what.

in Basketball...

Michael Jordan. Tenacious defender? You betcha. Played injured or sick? Hell yeah he did. Fierce competitor? None fiercer. Hard worker? Hell yeah. Others have had his physical abilities, some have had greater ones, but on one worked or played hard, and thats why he's the greatest.

as a person, MJ is not too great. gambling addict, adulterer, egomaniac, complete asshole. but as a basketball player? Its hard to argue that anyone before or since is more dedicated when you look at the complete picture.

yeah, that is something i can agree on. but john stockton is a very dedicated man when it comes to the sport he love. i remember when he was awarded a trophy by david stern when he reached a milestone(forgot what it was), sloan called a timeout, when stock got the trophy, he gave it to the first person he knew in the bench then he asked the officials to resume the game.

stockton was amazingly dedicated, sure. played as much as possible, at a tremendously high level, never gave anything up on d, always gave his all even before he became a starter and was by all accounts a tireless worker in practice.

but MJ was MJ, his work ethic, dedication and competitiveness are all legend, and for good reason.
