We live in an apartment with gas heating (like most homes and apartments on the planet) but I know more and more homes and apartments are switching to electric heating since natural gas prices are going through the roof. Electric used to be expensive but I'm wondering if you can get a better deal on it now with gas heating prices being so high.
Anyone have any experience with electric heating, cooking, etc? We had two gas leaks in our apartment this past weekend. I have asthma and I had to go spend the night at my great aunt's house because the gas got to me. It made me start wondering about apartments with only electric heating and if that might be better. (the gas leaks got fixed btw)
I was just curious about electric heating.
Thanks!

If you're having 2 gas leaks it's best to move out.
Other than that. I'd say that Electric heating is cheaper. But you need more, and it's less effective (from what I know).
The gas heaters are usually large units that cover all over the house, where as electric ones are small and don't store as much energy.
Also, if you go full electrical, with the energy in your house. If the electric goes out you won't have no energy at all from the cooker or anything.
But that's assuming you don't already have an electric cooker.

Gas is cheeper & more efficent. With electric you have forced hot air, which further dries everything out in the winter. Remember, electric has to be generated as well, so when the price of oil or gas goes up, so does electric.
Electric heat is more expensive, and electric stoves cost more to heat a meal than gas stoves.
On the other hand, my wife loves her glass-top electric stove and wouldn't ever trade it for a gas model.

Gas prices are sky rocketing, so as of right now, electric is cheaper. People in my city have had a 400% increase in their gas prices for heating, while mine is still as low as it has always been.
400% is actually not an exageration by the way.

Using electricity to produce heat is like using bottled water to water your lawn. I'd rather start a fire right in the middle of my living room than use electric heat, no matter the price.

Yes, yes. Inferno is right. Gas heating prices are said to rise 200-300% over last year in some parts of the country (US). 400 in others?!
Well, I can already see that.

You know, that's a good point. I didn't even think about that. (thanks GR!) :)

No, no my dear girl! I was kind of casually dating someone but that blew over. (pardon the pun...hee) My mom and brother live with me. They are the "we" I speak of.
We did happen to finally find an all electric apartment complex not far from my great aunt's house. I'm going to look into it just for the heck of it.
Thanks guys!

I live in a small town, just on the tip of Syracuse,NY. Literally right down the street from the mall. Should be cuse, but not.
Well we have a recycling center, and paper something. Anyways, they have lots of power left over from what ever they do..lol, and they sell it to the locals for dirt cheap. Seriously, two air conditioners, running 24/7, bill is 50 dollars. Now in the winter, our heat is at 75 or higher at all times and it's electric. On top of the other electric we use, light, etc etc......bill is 50 dollars..
It's freakin awesome...... :)

We recently switched from electric to gas heating, and are looking forward to having the $$$ to replace the electric range with gas. You get much better control of your cooking with gas.
