OK, marketability and recognizability, sure, but really, don't you think they ever get bored with a closet full of the same clothes? Not to mention, how do the other heroes know that he's not just wearing the same unwashed suit the next day?

Because they don't smell like they do?

I mean, sweat/waste/grime buildup is gonna smell pretty bad. I can't imagine them not washing.

And I think I'd prefer recognizability over a varying wardrobe. They worked hard to get their reputation, and their costume's a big part in easily picking them out.

And, in the Marvel Universe, heroes tend to wear costumes made with unstable molecules, courtesy of Reed Richards. Those costumes tend to be more durable and also able to adapt to shapeshifting, flexing super-muscles, and some super-powers.

From a corporate standpoint, costumes make it easier to even recognize certain heroes, which can sometimes be difficult with a deficient or wildly creative artist.

Remember the movie The Fly with Jeff Goldblum, he wore the same clothes everywhere. Finally his girlfriend asked him why and showed her his closet. Dozens of the same outfit. He explained that it's easier that way. No matter how tired he is when he gets dressed he knows he's putting on a matching set.

Yeah, but that doesn't explain a fashion plate like Johnny Storm. Remember when he wore the red outfit for like five minutes? That didn't last too long.

hmmmm, outside of the FF and the Avengers, you might could find one or two more that fit that category.

For the most part, Marvel characters wear just plain ol' clothes.

Heck, Spider-Man's made a cliche out of the torn up costume.

It's to help the tabloid photos in THE DAILY BUGLE or THE DAILY POST. Wearing the same costume over and over again means that the lazy editors need only buy a select few (or just one) and photoshop that again and again.

Only magical beings, heralds, cosmic beings can make themselves smell
fresh and also get their clothes clean at the sametime. If you're not one
of them, then you better have money like Janet Van Dye,aka the Wasp
or become part of the X-Men :p

Reading the Animal Man trades made me ponder another thing I hadn't considered before: how can superheroes walk around with their costumes under their civilian clothes all the time?
