I have not read many issues with Rachel (Yes, I am still finding my way! :o ), but I was quite taken with the character as she appeared in recent issues of Uncanny and New Excalibur.

Would you all please share your favorite Rachel moments with me? I am trying to go back and read as much about the character as I can.

Heck, I would even be interested in reading her worst moments. :D Anything that helps define the character. She has me intrigued!

I'm not a big Rachel fan but i love the arc where Wolverine almost killed her. It was a time when the X-Men were living with the Morlocks.

She was cool during Asgardian Wars too.

I can't remember the issues. Someone will, though. Probably DDM. : )

I think pretty much everyone would agree that the most visceral Rachel moment of all time would be when she tried to kill Selene, requiring Wolverine's intervention. I'm not going to spoil what happened, and I can't remember the issue number offhand (but someone will chime in with it soon), but it was one of those moments that occured so often in Claremont's run where fans' mouths gaped open and they said, "Holy freakin' cow, I can't believe he did that!"

Beyond that, early issues of Excalibur delved pretty deeply into Rachel's character. And of course Days of Future Past, her first appearance, is one of the best X-stories of all time... tell me you've read it by now, slive.

I finally tracked down a copy of Asgardian Wars!! It is on it's way. I am so excited. Marvel needs to do a re-print.

Why did Wolvie try to kill her?!

Why did Wolvie try to kill her?!

Wolverine was still in recovery with his battles with the Omega Sentinels via the Beyonder in Uncanny X-Men #202-203 & his battle with the adamantium enhanced new transformed into a cyborg, Lady Deathstrike in Uncanny X-Men #205.

Rachel almost died while fighting Freedom Force--Blob, Spiral, Avalanche, Pyro, & Spider-Woman II-- in San Francisco in Uncanny X-Men #206. Therefore, to atone for her ghosts, she believed by executing the Lords Cardinal, the Inner Circle of the Hellfire Club, would redeem herself. In this same issue, the X-Men stay with the Morlocks in an attempt to heal Wolverine faster with the Morlock, Healer's help. The other X-Men are mad at Rachel for using them in trying to destroy the universe in her attempt to kill the Beyonder. Rachel supercharges Wolverine's healing factor as Phoenix, but something goes wrong. Instead of healing Wolverine, Rachel creates a psychic rapport between herself & Wolverine. In the dreams, either Wolverine kills Rachel or Rachel kills Wolverine.

To free herself of her ghosts, she uses her psi-powers to infiltrate the Hellfire Club to kill the Lords Cardinal. Only Selene, the Black Queen, is present. Rachel turns into Phoenix in Selene's suite & attacks the Black Queen. Caught off-guard, Selene tries in vain to hold Rachel back. But Rachel, as Phoenix, is too powerful. In the heat of passion, just when Phoenix is about murder Selene, Wolverine interupts Rachel. Wolverine tries to reason with Phoenix. But nothing works. In Wolverine's weakened state, he stabs Rachel through the heart & lungs. All of this occurs in Uncanny X-Men #207.

Phoenix lives, but she is mortally wounded. The X-Men, the Lords Cardinal, & Nimrod are all after Phoenix. However, Spiral renders Phoenix amnesiac & takes her to Mojo World to be his slave Uncanny X-Men #208-209

Rachel's next appearance is Excalibur Special Edition #1 fleeing from Mojo's Warwolves in London.

Why did she try to kill Selene? I must know!

Selene covets Rachel's powers as Phoenix. Selene first fought Rachel in Uncanny X-Men #184 then again in Uncanny X-Men #189. Rachel has an intense hatred for Selene because she is evil & she became the Black Queen of the Hellfire Club, her mother's title which lead to Phoenix's transformation into Dark Phoenix.

I really liked when she defeated Wolverine/ Hydra's plans to kill the president in Wolverine Volume 2 #25. I've only read a handful of other comic books with her (just not into Claremont's recent work) but I just thought that was a great moment.

DDM, are these collected in a trade? I accidentally ended up with the Austen Uncanny trades when I went searching for Claremont.

I have the Uncanny New Age trades, but haven't had a chance to read them. I am looking forward to Asgardian Wars.

I got all giddy when her whole family was slaughtered in the latest issue of Uncanny X-Men. (For those who don't understand, this is me being sarcastic).

I also liked that it took her 13 seconds to even register a response to her grandfather being vaporized. Not just killed, but vaporized. (More sarcasm. It was a sad moment, folks. Sad indeed.)

Outside of that, though, it was cool when she overcame Bogan. I really liked that moment, when they rubbed off the soot and held her ever-so gently.

I think it was Uncanny 180 something. Rachel has just come back to the past and is hanging with the X-men. I forget the impetus of it, I'm thinking it was Storm losing her powers, but the actual X-men are having a closed door meeting about the future of the team. Its getting very heated and Nightcrawler is getting very upset and yelling at Xavier about the losses the team have suffered. He says something like "Thunderbird dead, Jean Grey dead." Rachel is telephathically eavesdropping on the conversation and freaks when Nightcrawler says Jean Grey is dead because in her past Jean lived. She doesn't know til this moment that she is in a different past. I found her reactions and angst much more realistic and moving than pretty much anything you see nowadays. Now you get crap like "Mama, why are you trying to take my man" or "Havok is going with Polaris" both of which recently occurred in the crap "milligan" book that X-men has recently become.

As others have said, Claremont created Rachel. He gets her. He should be the only one allowed to write her. Just like he should have exclusive dibs on Magneto. Everyone else just bastardizes them.

And when and where would this be Doombunny? I thought the slaugher of the Greys in Uncanny was horrific and emotional. Can Rachel still go Phoenix, like she did against Selene? Cause if she can, I think the Shi'ar will soon be extinct! :D

What, her recovery from Bogan? The second-to-last issue of X-Treme X-Men. An honestly heartfelt reunion, and I'm not even joking.

I thought the slaugher of the Greys in Uncanny was horrific and emotional.

So did I, but sarcasm tends to be lost in translation in internet-speak. :D

It was really, very sad.

Rachel has been SO downplayed since she came back. I want her to just flip out and kill all the Shi'ar assassins...and then all the Shi'ar...

Ooh, another favorite moment: Her return to Uncanny X-Men in issue 444. I'm referring to the costume, the hair, the whole getup. That was a great look for her. She was unique and spunky. Then Alan Davis started drawing her kinda butch.

I went and looked it up. It was Uncanny #188. Make sure while your reading in the area to read #189 and #190. It an awesome two part alternate reality story back when it was still cool and semi original to do alternate reality stories.

Lets see

DoFP. It's lays the foundation for Rachel's character, the future from hell and Franklin.

Asgardian Wars : Rachel and Scott. Bonding? Madness!

UXM #196: Rachel's first appearance as a Hound. Great ending with Magneto and Rachel.

UXM 199-209: The entire Dark Rachel Saga. Rachel becomes Phoenix and attempts to destroy the universe because of the Beyonder. Then Rachel attempts to kill the Hellfire club. Wolverine. Then...

Excalibur : The Sword is Drawn. Rachel escapes from the Mojoverse. Warwovles. Plus what I think is Rachel's finest moment. Her speech that leads to the formation of Excalibur.

Excalibur- any issue written by CC or Alan Davis. Plus Excalibur #71 by Scott Lobdell.

Cable #85-#95. Rob Weinberg wrote a great modern Rachel.

i enjoyed her when she first came around and when she helped form excalibur.
i haven't really enjoyed her since.
the mother askani stuff is missable and forgotten (rachel herself doesn't even remember it).
cable rescuing her from gaunt and her going off to college was alright. she had lost her connection to the phoenix.
cue her being revealed as bogan's telepath (lame storyline) and her return to the x-men and now she's got phoenix powers again (some of which were never hers to begin with, i.e. the shadow phoenix stuff).
i'm optimistic that she'll improve as a character, because right now i'm not enjoying what cc is doing with her/has done with her since 444.

I liked the Askani role for Rachel. Made her a sperate character ,from anything to do with Jean. Cable #71 is a favourite of mine, when as the Mother Askani she tells Ahab that she's beyond him. A nice forgotten gem for Rachel.

Plus these scenes are tremendous and really put over Rachel

Well that's what Rob Weinberg wrote but that doesn't mean that's what Fabian thinks. Askani has being mentioned by Cable a few times and Rachel was shown repairing the blackbird in UXM #444, a skill she picked up from Blaquesmith in the future.

Rachel loses her patience and destroys an ogre's castle.

That happens in Excalibur #13. Rachel is almost transformed into a demon too.

This intrigues me. And I am getting the 40 years of X-Men dvd rom on Thursday!! I had forgotten. So DDM, I shall have access to those issues in color. I am really excited now!!

Thanks everyone who has posted so far! I am enjoying reading these recollections. :) And I am writing down every single issue number you guys post, so that I can read them all.

Here's a good list. It's missing a couple, like New Mutants #18, X-Men/Alpha Flight, and Marvel Team-Up; but it's pretty comprehensive. It's listed roughly in the order of when it happened in her life, so you can see that issues that had flashbacks that happened before another event, although published later, are listed first. Days of Future Past TPB
Essential X-Men 5
UXM #199-209
Classic Excalibur TPB - Collects Excalibur : The Sword is Drawn and the first 5 issues of Excalibur.

That would give you DoFP Rachel, Normal Rachel, Hound Rachel, Phoenix Rachel and Excalibur Rachel. Plus they are all good X-Men stories to boot.

I have read DOFP. And I have the UXM issues. I need to get Classic Excalibur definitely. In fact, I am going to order that right now! I do have a few of the Essential volumes, but not 5.

This is excellent! Thanks guys. :)

Maybe not specific moment or moments, but I liked the stories of End Of Greys and Wandrin Star. If there is a story arc that would cause sympathy or attachment to the character, it would be those two story arcs because of the impact to Rachel's life as well as to those close to her.

I liked the X-Men Unlimited story where Havok and her get a meal at a diner... it's honestly the first time I actually found the character sympathetic, at all. She's done pretty well for herself, since.

I think it still rates below Nightcrawler suckerpunching Mephisto, but that is impressive, and needs to happen more often.

But, what was the reason for Rachel slapping the Beyonder here?

If Kurt got to punch Mephisto then I hope Peter Parker gets to anally rape him with a jackhammer or ....something!!! Something really horrible.

I realized that I keep getting confused between the Beyonder and the Watcher for some reason..

But, what was the reason for Rachel slapping the Beyonder here?

He put all the X-Men in danger of getting killed by Sentinels created from Ray's future and then gave her a huge power up to deal with it. It's all part of his manipulation that plays out in the next issue. And then I think they clash again in Secret Wars 2 but after all these years I've still never read that. lol

Rachel hanging out with Betsy during House of M

Rachel being revealed as the Mysterious Telepath controlled by Bogan

Rachel taking down Dark Sisters in Cable

Rachel having fun during the Cross-Time Capers

Rachel frying Wolverine and throwing him at an oncoming train

Rachel taking down Alpha Flight single-handedly and hugging her 'dad' (This is when I first liked her)

The part where she says My Turn got me all excited for the hell she broke loose.

Also: I am not my mother, I am not the phoenix, but when I am done, you are gonna wish I was!

That is what actually made me like Rachel Grey as a character.
