So, let's talk about rum. Since I have family from the Caribbean, rum can be found in any family 'holiday' gathering.
Most of the brands are from Puerto Rico and one is from the Dominican Republic. Actually, the one from DR is rum fermented with herbs and honey. It's damn good, but slightly on the strong side. It's called mamajuana (hilarious name).
I'd only use Bacardi for mixed drinks.
So, anyway, what are your favorites? Which are the worst? What distinguishes different brands of rums in your opinion?
Let's talk rum, baby.

Rum and me tend not to agree. Hey, that rhymes. Gives me an odd kind of intoxication that I tend not to care for as much.

I like daiquiris. Not the frozen kind--the old school kind. Rum, lime and sugar.

So *that's* why the rum is gone. Lena drank it all!

My Wife brought back some of that Mamajuana from her trip to the Dominican Republic. It is just a bottle of herbs that you have to add your own rum too. She tried it down there and said it was awful, but I am very curious.

It's damn strong, that's why.
It's a purported 'cure all' and aphrodiasiac and it depends on who made it.

I spent years in Guatemala & Nicaragua. The rum there is good but not world-beating. What I did learn was that dark rum is best for flavor.
Flor de Caña (Nicaraguan, not Honduran) is an excellent cuba libre ingredient; and Zacapa Centenario (Guatemalan) is pretty good for drinking straight.
If you just wanna get blown away, drink 151 (super-strength: pure hangover in a bottle! :D )

Mount Gay rum is the best, IMO. One of the locals turned me onto it when my wife and I were honeymooning in the British Virgin Islands. On the rocks with a lemon peel. Excellent.

This is the only song I know that's about rum:
Oh, the African man cuts the sugar cane
Oh, molasses
He works in the sun and he works in the rain
Oh, molasses rum
Then he loads it up on a wooden ship and he sends it off on a northern trip
Singing, oh molasses, oh molasses rum
CHORUS
Oh, molasses Old New England tea
It killed my grandpa, killed my pa
And it sure as Hell is killing me
Singing, oh molasses, oh molasses rum
When they fought the war for the colonies…
They fought it over New England tea…
When Old King George put a tax on it the colonies nearly took a fit…
In the time of the 1917 war
Molasses sitting on the Boston shore
When they pumped it in it was twelve degrees, a long cold night in a Boston freeze
In the morning it was 42
Molasses vat split clean in two
Two million gallons covered the bay, 26 people drowned in the flood that day
My grandpa he died cutting cane
My pa went down in the great brown rain
But I won't go in a pool of blood, no I won't drown in a black-strap flood
Still, I'll go down to molasses, oh molasses rum

Once you've tried Appleton Estates, none of the rest are worth drinking.
And I speak from considerable experience.

Pusser's "British Navy" spiced rum is good. I'm gonna take Howie's advice on Appleton Estates and pick up a bottle real soon.
Most mass marketed spiced rums are too sweet for me (i.e. Captain Morgan's) but still good for a couple of drinks.

So what's a bottle (750 ml) run for? Not that the price matters much, because I'm going out tomorrow on my day off to get one anyway. Howie, how do you usually drink it? Rocks? With a mixer?

With a mixer?Y'know, I don't even pay attention to the price much, but it's not much more expensive than other rums, I think.
Over Christmas, though, the liquor store near my parents' place had half-gallons on sale for $50 Canadian. We went through one and a half of 'em in 2 weeks.
As for mix, I usually mix it with Coke - 2 parts Appleton, 1 part Coke. And lots of ice.

I'm a Meyer's dark rum sort of guy. Never had the Appleton's. Gonna have to remedy that.
