View Full Version : Exactly what training has Batman received, and from whom?

Me again.

I've read about Batman's time with various trainers, like Ducard for ballistics and Wildcat for martial arts.

I'm curious as to what skills Bruce Wayne trained intensely in during his pre-Batman travels, and who his mentors were.

Thanks in advance.

He trained with David Cain, though I don't know what he learned from him exactly. He also learned detective skills from Henri Ducard I believe. This is a sketchy subject which DC hasn't really clarified. I don't even know if the Durcard training is in the current continuity. Also post-Batman he received something of a "refresher" course from Lady Shiva.

Wildcat taught him boxing - and knows that Bruce Wayne = Batman because of his boxing style.

Who else might he have learned from?
Medical science (at least enough for high-level first aid) - Dr. Mid-Nite I (Charles McNider)?

Bruce learned martial arts from Master Kirigi, who also trained a bunch of assassins. (BATMAN #431 (http://www.milehighcomics.com/cgi-bin/backissue.cgi?action=enlarge&issue=07206180254%20431)).

"The Many Deaths of the Batman" (BATMAN #433-435 (http://www.milehighcomics.com/cgi-bin/backissue.cgi?action=fullsize&issue=07206180254%20433)) involved a serial killer who targeted the people who trained Bruce. I disliked the story quite a bit, so I'm foggy on the details, but I remember an explosives expert and, uh, a snake expert being among the victims.

He learned deductive skills - and the value of detaching yourself from your emotions - from a kindly southern detective who I think was named Harvey or something (DETECTIVE COMICS ANNUAL #2 (http://www.milehighcomics.com/cgi-bin/backissue.cgi?action=fullsize&issue=24042490432%202) - that was from the late 1980s. Weird to think 'TEC only had two annuals at the time, eh?)

An Alaskan private investigator named Willie taught Bruce how to be a manhunter in LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT #1-5 (http://www.milehighcomics.com/cgi-bin/backissue.cgi?action=fullsize&issue=47741185612%202).

"Blind Justice" (DETECTIVE COMICS #598-600 (http://www.milehighcomics.com/cgi-bin/backissue.cgi?action=fullsize&issue=24038627564%20598)), the story in which Ducard made his debut, also showed some of the shady ninja types who Bruce studied under.

For some reason, I remember Alfred giving Bruce some tips on the finer points of acting. I may be hallucinating, however. (Earth-2 Batman actually studied theatre in university.)

Wasn't that in a 0 issue?

Also in the zero issues, it showed young Bruce only studying certain subjects. Reminds me of Sherlock Holmes, you only study what you need to learn.

He was well up in things such as chemistry that would help him, but if it didn't, such as history, he'd have nothing to do with it.
