I'm almost half-way though his first book "Angels & Demons" and I'm loving it.

It doesn't read like his first book it's that good.

The research Mr.Brown must have done for it had to be staggering in scope.

Basically the story is the origin of Robert Langton, the protogonist of The Da Vinci Code*, has him teaming up with a beautiful Italian scientist to save Vatican City from the Illumuniati.

If you like thrillers, mysteries and conspiracies check it out!

I hope they make it into a movie at some point, too.

It even has Kirby-type technology, as well.

*Angels & Demons takes place a year before The Da Vinci Code

Only a little bit into it but yeah, it's a fun read. I was just recently involved in an accident and I'm all casted up with plaster and bandages so it's hard to concentrate whilst on painkillers. Otherwise, I'd have finished it by now. I read the DVC in a couple of days and this reads much the same.

I loved A&D very much. Whereas I couldn't get through TDVC.

I could be wrong but I believe Angels and Demons actually came out before The Davinci Code. It was reprinted after the success of DaVinci so some may think its new when its really not. I think he also wrote Deception Point, another good thriller without religious connotations, prior to DaVinci as well.

That might be because it was actually his third book. Oops. ;)

I think his stuff's just okay.

I hate the term "overrated" because it gets used too much and often inappropriately, but it applies in the case of The Da Vinci Code. A silly little book that doesn't deserve the attention it has gotten.

I disagree. In my mind, it's a fun piece of fiction(people seem to forget that) that I would easily read again. I like to think of it as an elseworlds title. Using a mix of theory, fact and imagination, Dan Brown creates the Da Vinci Code.

My mistake.

I think his stuff's just okay.

His writing reminds me of Michael Crichton, another author I like.

Well, The Da Vinci Code became famous becuase of the controvercy surrounding its plot, which the Vatican indirectly helped giving it publicity from their protests rather than its quality.

That's probaly why your expectations were raised. Remember Brown is new to writing novels. He still has to master his craft.

Does anybody know/remember if "Holy Blood, Holy Grail" resulted in a similar uproar or wasn't it as well known at the time.
