Not an overwhelming amount of really good new bands, but 2005 did see a handful of excellent debuts...my three favorites:

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Yeah, they're pretty much standard indie rock, but they do it well and i like that I occasionally hear some shoegaze influence. Very nice, fun little band.

Wolf Parade
Soooooooooo gooooooooood. Arcade Fire by way of Modest Mouse. They've already surpassed Arcade Fire in my opinion (as awesome as their Candian compatriots Arcade Fire are), and if they keep going at this rate, they can reach the same level as Modest Mouse (and may surpass them if Modest Mouse doesn't reverse the downward trend started by Good News. Another indie hype band...but they're deserving. Apologies to the Queen Mary = great debut.

but....the new band of the year is not either of those two...it's a band that's unlike any i've ever heard...it's experimental folk mixed with alt rock and a bit of electronica thrown in for good measure. Know who I'm talking about?

AKRON/FAMILY

These guys are incredibly unbelievably good. You have the hear them to understand. I'm totally in love with The Decemberists' Picaresque and K-Rino's Worst Rapper Alive (not to mention the above albums, Takk..., Illinois, Woman King, In The Reins, and more), but this album may damn well be the best new album of the year. It's important, experimental, and beautiful.

Anyway, as much as I'd like to continue on about Akron/Family ( http://www.myspace.com/akak ), what new artist/band is your favorite?

My favorite new group of the year is Antigone Rising. (http://www.antigonerising.com) They released their debut album From The Ground Up and it's fantastic. You can read my review of the CD here. (http://www.rock-is-life.com/reviews/antigonerising.htm)

My runner up was the band Orange Sky. (http://www.theorangesky.com) They are a band from Trinidad & Tobago and turned out a great sounding rock album called Upstairs. Read my review here. (http://www.rock-is-life.com/reviews/upstairs.htm)

Heard of them, but never actually heard them. Listened to the songs on their myspace and I like them very much.
