Okay...Wanda's intention at the end of HoM #7 was to eradicate all the mutants, right? So I was taking a shower and it occured to me that every mutant hadn't lost their powers and mutant gene, kinda like a *click* in my head. Why didn't everyone lose their mutation? I don't remember this being cleared up.

Dr. Strange's attempted counterspell saved the ones he could.

It was cleared up. Emma mentions in #8 that Wanda erased the mutant gene from AS MANY AS SHE COULD REACH.

That answers it. Plus Wanda herself kept saying "I cant control any of it." So its not suprising that some mutants still have powers. Some still have physical mutations, but no powers.

Dr. Strange's attempted counterspell saved the ones he could.

No. Thats not true. Emma's Mental shield and Dr Stranges spell allowed the people rigt there in their group on Genosha to REMEMBER what happened during HOM and save them from Wanda, but they didnt save any other mutants. That was just luck.

1.) The correct term is "Woogie", thanks much. :D

2.) There's a lof of theories. I personally think that partially, Wanda knew deep down that people like the X-Men are needed to protect the world, and therefore her "spell" was not complete because subconciously she didn't want it to be. Or something. That, and what Beast and ibrake said.

because Emma Frost and Dr Strange interfered with her whammy at the last moment. read the last issue of House of M again. you'll see Emma and Doc Strange react before she actually says, "NO more mutants." it's also why some of the characters still have their memories of HoM. tell you the truth, i blame the heroes for all of this. how can Spiderman be angry at Pietro for something he basically did to himself? he didn't have to help topple Magneto's regime. it was the confrontation that led to Wanda erasing mutant powers. and it was the interference that resulted in the randomness of mutants losing their abilities.

Because they needed a reason to keep Lila Cheney around... <groan of doom>

I guess what you guys have written above is going down as the official line but it doesn't make sense to me - why would Wanda's power work so randomly, so that Dani loses her powers but the mutant next to her didn't? why would one Academy X character lose their powers, but not their room-mate?

I don't see how any counter-spell, psychic shield or hesitance in her woogie would bring about this result

but I've reconciled it to being something i have to accept as "it's comics"

I agree. None of it makes sense. At the end the day, Wanda was just used as an excuse for Marvel and Bendis to make the changes they wanted to make. Throughout the characters history, lazy writers have used her powers as a plot device.

too true.

but it's usually made a bit more sense ...

this time I just don't get it.

and, DH, I love a lot of Bendis' work elsewhere, which is why I am not one to say "*shrug* it's Bendis"

that only makes it more disappointing and frustrating for me, that a talented writer I've spent so much time and energy defending wrote something I can't begin to make sense of

but ...

maybe we're not meant to be able to make sens eof it and it will all be explained in Son of M or somewhere else :)

No, I guess i'm just Mr Gone Daft With The Sun today

It was mentioned in Son of M #1.

Remember there were holes in the HoM world (Wolverine's memory, Hawkeye, Layla Miller, Spider-Man's diary etc.) the world wasn't perfect... and neither is the woogie she's done now.

Once again Wanda was so close but failed.

Dr. Strange's attempted counterspell saved the ones he could.I didn't catch that. Just reread the issue. I expected the master of the arcane arts to perform is counterspell better than that.

Bendis writes Dr. Strange as grossly incompetant.

Wanda: "You may be the Sorcerer Supreme of Earth, but I'm the Deus Ex Machina! I wave my hand & make anything happen you old bunny rabbit!"

Dr Strange: "No Wanda don't!"

[poof!]

Dr. Strange is turned into a bunny rabbit.

Wanda: Anyone want bunny rabbit stew? Bahahahahaa! I'm so out of character!"

Really close nearby... like really close to her

He was right there at the battle. But didn't Strange say himself that this type of magic was new to him and so chaotic he couldn't tame it or some such crap back in Avengers Dissassembled? Plus, when she did that he was protecting people in the vicinity against it, so he was pre-occupied really. But yes, Bendis does kind of write Strange off as less powerful.

Yes, Bendis contradicted Dr. Strange when Strange had long established chaos magic does indeed exist in the 1987's Strange Tales.

Ah, alright then...I wasn't reading back then so I wouldn't of known. But I thought for sure that's what he said in Dissassembled.
