Spoilers, I guess

So I guess Peter David is ignoring the changes in Rahne that were established in New X-Men? Long hair, less accent?

Don't get me wrong, I prefer David's version, but geez, it wasn't but a couple months ago we last saw the other version.

Yeah, thank god for that.

Actually, I liked that. She's lived in NY how long? She'd lose the accent a little, or at least tweak her vocab to make understanding her easier. That, plus the fact that very few writers do decent Scots that doesn't feel like a bad stereotype, and that I'm in the Central Belt, and don't know many people who go overboard with it (a "wee" or "numpty" here or there, but not much more), means it's easier for me to think "Hey, there's a cool Scots chick" rather than "Whoopee, more bad stereotyping"

He adressed those changed in the Madrox-limited (trying to fit in better by hiding the accent, but around Jamie she feels more relaxed so the accent slips in again.)

Her accent also slips back into her speech when she's impassioned, and well...she was pretty impassioned. :D

(Any reason we're not discussing this in the issue thread?)

I knew Flight was Chris Claremont in disguise!

Wanda is a glutton for unintelligible accents.

Along with Peter David, Nunny and Christina also established that she was only trying to clear up her accent because she did not want to be known as the Rahne that Xian and Dani knew, because she felt they go back to the 'whee cute' Rahne. Wheras with Jamie she didn't mind, because she felt he would not see her like that. Or something along those lines.

But even with her attempt to get rid of it entirely, when she spoke without intention to hide the accent it had still faded a bit. Considering her time in the Us and junk.

But...what about the hair?

(I didn't see the X-Factor review thread when I started this. I expect to see them merged at any time...)

*gasp* how could they not have an issue devoted to that??

Having two girls with long red hair in one comic would have made it harder for readers to distinguish. ANd seeing as how "short and fuzzy" is Rahne's signature look, I'm glad they went with it, rather than giving Siryn some mod new look (not that that wouldn't be bad someday).

I really like the way Rahne looks. Serious and simple, but unique. IMO, it suits her far better than the biker chick makeover. I has a certain Joan of Arc look.

Nunzio and Christina explained it, and they applauded PAD for her going back to her roots. They explained that among her old buddies, she feels a lot more comfortable. She can be herself.

I can understand that, when I'm with my family I'm all "Pahk the cah in Hahvahd yahd." But when I'm around other people I speak properly, of course its forced, but its proper.

Aww I feel like Rahne's friend now.

What, did they resurrect Moira, and let Claremont write her again? :D
Bedard did use the word "bampot" in Exiles, which is a nice touch, even if Proteus sounds more like someone from River City than an actual Scots teen/young guy.
But, really, if you're not going to have Storm or Wolverine talk in dialect/accent, don't do it for "lesser" characters.

I wouldn't think that a character who spent her childhood regretting the fact that her hair wouldn't grow out would be quick to cut it once it did.

I'm more apt to believe - now that I think about it - that when Rahne's powers returned, her ability to have longer hair slowly went away, as did her more pleasant personality...

Not my call. That's the way she looked in Ryan's sketches, so I assume either Ryan liked her better that way or editor Andy Schmidt decided to go back to the shorter cut. Me, I prefer it that way simply because it distinguishes her from the other females on the team, but I didn't register a preference.

PADI agree. Siryn has red hair too, so I guess the short hair makes it easier to see the distinction between her and Terry.

Well Peter, if you could just work in an in-story explanation at some point, given Rahne's past distaste for her short hair, that would be great.

In fact have that be the 3rd arc...

I didn't say devote an entire arc to it, just a casual mention for people who like their characters to have consistent personalities...

She cut off her hair, not a finger. It's really not a major personality marker. It's just something people do.

The hair on the top or Rahne's head is supposedly like the hair on a dog or wolf, which won't grow past a certain length. But during her Excalibur days it got much longer. It's not really an issue, but it would be interesting if it were addressed as to why her hair is so short again. I just love Rahne, and whatever development she gets, I'm happy with.
