Wow ...that does look like fun. I guess you have to sit with your back to the wall so people don't get overly flattered when they sneak a peek over your shoulder.
That one in the middle looks like she could really go for some brains. The other guys don't look as hungry.

Excellent zombies. Rick, weren't you working on a comic zombie project at one point? What ever became of that?

07-14-2004, 09:31 AM
Wonderful painstaking detail on the withered flesh, there. And a much more interesting exercise than simply posing a classroom skeleton.
One minor critique, which I wish I hadn't thought of in the first place: the 3/4 view zombie on the left is... nippling. For taphologic and aesthetic reasons, I believe that she should not be.
Excuse me, I'm going to rinse out my brain now.

Thanks, all.
Petriacce: I put New Yarrgh! aside last year and did a short with my character Reckless Eric instead. And funny that you bring it up because I'm now thinking of retooling the old zombie story and jumpstarting it again.
Here are some pages from the Reckless Eric story. He's not normally this cartoony but I chose this style since the story would eventually end up in a humor book:

awesome, and inspiring drawings as usual, rick. now here's a real nooby question. i have been trying my hands at drawing sequentials (gotta stop using that word) with what i can find arnd the room. and the best i can come up with is a piece of A4 and a 3b pencil. the end result is
this thread i posted (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?t=10273) (hope that worked)
yeah, i know i looks horrid, specially when i got a faulty scanner
what i wanna know is, what ARE the tools to draw a good clean comic with (up to the stage of inking)??? and if there are any other barbie tossing aussies out there, where can a true blue like me find them tools??
hellboyone
07-16-2004, 08:28 AM
All any artist will tell you is use the tools that fit you best. Ask 10 different comic artists and they'll tell you 10 methods. At the end of the day, I'm most comfortable with my col-erase pencils and plain ol' typing paper. Since most of my work eventually ends up digital, the paper I draw on isn't all that important.

... I still think "beard" is a bizarre term!
I wonder what the etymology of it is
beard - Pronunciation Key (bīrd)
n.
1. The hair on a man's chin, cheeks, and throat.
2. A hairy or hairlike growth such as that on or near the face of certain mammals.
3. A tuft or group of hairs or bristles on certain plants, such as barley and wheat.
4. One who serves to divert suspicion or attention from another.
[Middle English berd, from Old English beard. See bhardh-- in Indo-European Roots.]

Fantastic stuff Rick. That zombie sketch studies ideas I'll have to nick too. You have such a knack for zombie-fi-ing you need to speak to a Mr Robert Kirkman and ask if he needs a few pin-ups for his The Walking Dead book. Serious, ask him.
I know this is Rick's art thread, but I came across some art by a good old friend of mine, Chris Christian. He too had a knack for zombie-fi-ing. So he did pics of all his mates as zombies. So for your entertainment, I present....

The image is a detail from a painted plate which would be around 23 inches wide. The painting is done over the course of several days/ weeks and is completely encased in the clear glass. This piece is in a private collection in Vancouver! (yaay - they usually end up in the 'states) The colour is badly reproduced and it was a rush in-house photo job.. end qualifiers
oooh this is uncomfortable tad rick otto :evilangry
Morna, no matter how much people whine, you don't have to post stuff. Eventually, they give up, scenting fresh blood in the waters.
But you did so I'm giving you a crit:
Unless I'm reading it wrong, you put the RIGHT hand of Doom on the left side. Typical noob mistake. I appreciate that you used the comic Kroenen instead of the blade wielding version from the movie and Ilsa looks lovely, too lovely. She has a sort of dew-kissed, fraulein-next-door innocence that I can't see as being part of her nature.
Seriously, it's a neat piece but a photo can't capture seeing this sort of thing in person. A photographer goes out of his way to keep highlights out of an image but it's the high gloss surface that adds depth (for me, anyway) and the relationship of the "graphic" to the overall shape of the piece that creates the visceral, "cool!" reaction.

morna... chocolate sauce. I was asking if you did the piece from
start to finish or just the clear glass process at the end. )
Otto sweety-face, Gary will now explain the process for these ALL GLASS pieces... Thank-you Gary...
Hem, hem... Thank you Morna, dahling. O.K. first she blows out a thick egg shaped blank about six inches tall. After it cools she sandblasts the whole thing, giving the surface tooth. Then she sits at her desk and stares at it for a long time. Eventually, she lays out a fluid drippy line drawing with Black Paradise Paint. After the layout is dry she mixes colours and covers the whole egg shaped blank with coloured Paradise Paint. (Paradise paints get their name from Paradise, California and are high temperature enamels. I think that they are made from super densely saturated coloured glass that has been ground into a very fine powder and mixed with pine oil). Once the colours dry she loads the blank into kiln, heats it up, picks it up on the end of a blowpipe and heats it in a furnace until the paints fire polish and fuse onto the surface. Then she gather successive layers of molten glass over the blank and blows it out using traditional glassblowing techniques into a final form. Because they are looked at from the inside the plates and bowls have the further technical challenge of being "reverse painted". Paradise Paints come in the three primary colours, brown, green, black and white. Because heat is involved many of the colour mixes change and reds and purples are actualy hard to pull off. Her large plates have a seperately blown outer rim and require a team of four people to pull off. A thousand pardons for not making this a twenty world essay. Gary
wow... thanks Gare
and now the edit...
Oh, yeah. About the imagery. Morna often says things about how she heavily abstracts thoughts and feelings into her compositions and usually gives them crypitic titles, encouraging viewers to interpret what they will. I have watched the work evolve over the years and developed a theory that often they are about stuff like me leaving my socks lying around.

Double posting is also messed up... but I can't do anything about that...

Dude, get over it.
'Sides, Tad is cool enough to the point where he can get away with saying 'noob'. :p I've hung around pleny adults who've used that term before... nothin' suprising for me.
Then again, I've always HATED the whole 'Oh, they're [insert age here], so therefore they can't do/say [insert something here]' mindset that some people have. It's just so... immature.

Sorry, young ones. I meant "noob" as a shortened form of "newbie." Is there some other meaning that requires coolness to use? And you'll note it's buried in a totally ridiculous crit of Morna's dish so that any language used is strickly tongue in cheek.
Otto? My comment had nothing to do with requesting art. It had to do with the pressure Morna was feeling to post. Yeah, I'm glad she posted but she shouldn't feel she has to. And "whine" was just as caricatured as the rest of the sentence... unless you really can sense blood in the water.

Rick, I haven't been following this thread for a few days, and look what I,ve missed. I love the zombie monkey and pig. Hell, all the zombies are great, and your Hellboy is one of my favorite versions of the character.
If you're still taking requests, I'd like to see a zombie Guillermo, and I know he'd love it too. Would double posting increase the chances of you drawing this up? :D
Hehe, instead of double posting, how about I second the zombie Guillermo? Maybe it's just that I've been up til five in the morning the last three or four days and the lack of sleep is finally getting to me, but that idea amuses me greatly :D
And so I finally say something instead of just ogling the pretty art - I love your stuff Rick! I should have said it before, but I love the zombie pig. For some reason it makes me think of the demon-ized boar gods in Princess Mononoke. And the Hellboy pics just rock, of course.

Morna,
Beautiful pieces. I love to see artists working in processes that are difficult. I have a printmaking degree, and if you know anything about printmaking (etchings in particular) you know it's a very long and slow proccess.
Non-print majors, asked why would I take all that time and effort to do something that I could have done in a quarter of the time just by drawing the image, or doing on the computer. It's hard to explain, but there is a huge reward to doing work with your hands, the old way, the way people don't do anymore, the way that makes the item that much more special: the long way.
Oh and Rick, Zombie GdT would be fun..so would Zombie ICBM.....

Morna,
Beautiful pieces. I love to see artists working in processes that are difficult. I have a printmaking degree, and if you know anything about printmaking (etchings in particular) you know it's a very long and slow proccess.
Thanks! I have actually done quite a bit of printmaking - tho' not lately - mostly etchings and aquatint. I love the feeling of those processes. Have you ever done - now I can't remember what the name of it is - it's where you take this crazy rocker tool and burr up the whole plate and create the image by pressing the burrs back down - now THAT"S a lot of work... but the effect is incomparably gorgeous and atmospheric. Now that I think of it your watercolours remind me a lot of aquatints. Is that intentional?
Petersen
07-19-2004, 06:24 PM
the technique working black back to white on a rockered plate, is called Mezzotint.
I was mainly doing etchings, although later I got into wood block printing (knowing that it was healthier for me, and I could continue to do it after I graduated and lost the posh University studio.)
Of the etched techniques, I enjoyed hardground mines best...I stayed away from aquatint as much as I could. I went to 2 differnt art schoolsfor my degree, one used the powedered rosin for the aquatint, the other used enamed spray paint. I wasn't a fan of the flatness aquatint tended to give anyhow, but once I had to use enamel, I quit. Instead I would coat my plate with soft ground and roll a texture of sandpaper, then etch that..very similar to the look of aquatint, but more controlable...
oh, and sorry to all of you who have no idea what I'm talking about...
I have a week off coming up here..perhaps I will put a printmaking basics page together (and I can throw in examples of the process like Rick wanted)
oh, and no, my watercolor technique has more to do with not painting tightly. My paintings can get really cramped and fall flat if I overwork them the slightest bit, so to compensate, I work as loose as I can.

I love The Heist. Not so much for the movie but for the lines of dialogue. Every character in this movie's got a mouthful every time they talk.
"Cuter than Chinese babies."
Only Mamet can get away with that writing.
Spanish Prisoner's great too. Haven't seen State and Main.
Mamet loves Rebecca Pidgeon, who appears in all these movies. I think it's because she delivers his dialogue so cleanly, without any doubt about what she's saying. She seems stilted at times, but you'll never think "What's she say?" because the delivery is spot-on.

Printmakers rock. I went to SDCC with a couple of them.
The term "noob"/"newb"/"newbie" was in coined around the time ICBM was a "newbie" to the world. Oh wait, you still are, at 16.
Glad to see Morna is starting to share art stuff.
Seeing Rick and a lot of this Rick Art in the (rotting) flesh was one of my personal highlights of the con. He and the art are even better in person. I wish you'd been able to stick around at the con for longer, Rick, but I'm glad you were able to be there at all.

I created this character yesterday at the coffee shop. Tad was there but had left when I came up with this nonsense. Anyway...I'm sure this is hypothermia-induced since I was sitting directly under the a/c and was freezing to death on a warm summer night.

And I drew this a few minutes ago...I think I have a new thing to procrastinate about. :)

Rick, for some reason I am picturing Jonny Depp being cast in the future movie....
This has merchandising potential! Action figures, Pez, plushies, the works! Does he fight denizens of the deep when he's not angst-ridden over the state of his life? Looking forward to more Cortes zaniness...:D

Thanks, John.
Crimony's actually a variation on another character of mine whom I like even more but is a little more rated-R. His name is Nicky McSwelkid. Some might remember him from my old website. I'll post a pic when I find him.

I'm all zombied out at the moment. Now, Johann, on the other hand...
AHHHHH!!!! It's JOHANN!!! :D
I *LOVE* it! That is just too cool!! :)
Next week, new seats or I'm bringing a parka. Love the crabhead, Rick. Let me know if any of the comic jams are posted. I really wanted to see the end of some of those.
Comic jam: Illustration paper is passed back and forth. Each person adding a panel with or without dialogue. Comics improv style and like good improv, surprisingly entertaining.
Miss the comfy, overstuffed chairs of the hotel lobby at SDCC.

I can't wait to see his disturbing origin story. ;)

Right on, man. This book is the coolest. My friend Clay Moore created the character. He has also optioned it to Hollywood and the title character will hopefully be played by Johnny Knoxville, whom I think is PERFECT for the role. Enjoy the book! Let me know whatcha think of it.
Keep in mind too that the amazing artwork was completely done in Photoshop. Pretty impressive..

Still haven't read it, but I flipped through the book, and I absolutely LOVED the art. The cover was the thing that got me to buy it! The style was what inspired me to color one of my pictures with the 'paintbrush' setting in PSP7 all big and wide. Damn.
When I get a chance (already got lots of calc homework), I'll read the book. I know I'll enjoy it!

Aww, you guys... :)
Well, these are from last night's "beatnik" coffee shop drawing night.
This is sort of inspired by some Tony Salmons artwork I've been seeing lately.
Salmons is just ridiculous with a brush. Of course, I'm too big of a pussy to
do the same so here's some green pencil facsimile..
