Cool. Ed, Mark, and I were the only ones at coffee last night. Ed and I expressed how much we were looking forward to seeing your story all finished. Mine's done being colored. I'm in lettering/writing mode (none of the dialogue I have is finalized yet).

nice sketches Rick, they're all great but i like the guy at the top right. Just something about him...i dunno. The office worker that doesn't quite like his job, but enjoys the workplace. Nice guy, despite what the tatoo's and the stud generally depict.
you can get a feeling for all these characters even though they're just sketches.
Oh...and the cave-dude is just awsome! :D

Love 'em all, but the office guy with the neck tattoo was the first to catch my eye.
Office culture and neck tattoos always make for an interesting character.

Thanks for the support, Cure. Yep, it'll be available at the con.
Here's something else. I've got two shirt designs in the running over at threadless.com. It's a great site that the rest of you artists should get in on. You design a t-shirt according to their specs, submit it, and it gets voted on. The highest scoring designs get picked through by the staff and they become t-shirts for all to purchase. It's fun. Here are the links to click and vote. You might have to sign up for the site to vote, but it's free and it'll also let you vote on other shirts as well as submit your own designs:

Man, that is a hideous hat!
Seriously though, that's a pretty cool drawing. Her face is really wonderfully horrific.
The only part I'm not convinced by is her arm. I think the negative space indicating fabric wrinkles needs to be the reverse image of the black strokes indicating wrikles. The white areas are too comparitively squared off and don't indicate the roundness of her arm. I like the way you drew curly-cue shadows on her chest though and I like the gory drippy-ness of the shadows of her skirt. It would be cool to experiment with making every aspect of an otherwise innocuous drawing somehow gory upon closer inspection.
Her face really is outstanding. Eaag!
Petersen
06-24-2005, 08:52 AM
I agree with Gary & Ruta. My fave part is the 'dripping' fade of the bootom of the dress. And I filled in her arm solid black and I think the image became stronger. It has a wonderful mood about it! more more more!!!

Thanks for the critiques! You guys are right on with the sleeve. I looked at it first before I read what you guys thought and wasn't all too pleased with the arm bit (among other things). But I thought that creepy head was a good start. If you still wanna buy it, it'll be even cheaper now. :)
I might try Mr. Petersen's suggestion of filling the arm in completely...
Okay...here are some things to expect in San Diego...up first...the cover for our SD mini sketchbook. I volunteered to do it this year. We came up with an idea and I came up with a few variations before we all settled on one we liked. Here are some of the versions, from first to final:

http://www.rickcortes.com/sd05page3.jpg
We're also doing an art postcard set called Chicks Dig Robots. There will be about 7 or 8 postcards in the set depicting various ladies and their mechanical buddies. Here's a crop from mine. The real version is a head-to-toe illustration. This was done completely in Photoshop:
http://www.rickcortes.com/chickrobot_crop.jpg
And finally, a drawing of Einstein on PS just to fool around with textures I photographed. I used a bit of metal texturing on the robot above as well....:

There is something bizzare and ominous about the 1st version of the sketchbook cover (dark background, colored rooster) I like that one best, but the final is good too, and more eye catching.
I stumbled on your drawings before I ever joined this forum Rick, and I got very jelous of some faces you had sketched...seems like there was a guy who looked like Lando on one of the pages. You made what I wanted to do with comic portraiture look effortless. And it's good to see that type of work show up again in your sketchbook page sample. The folks in Turbans are terrific. It has a precision and calmness that I think makes it the strongest style of your body of work.

You find a scene without much movement that pans around a bit.So technically speaking, he does have two viewpoints - they are just very similar

10-06-2005, 09:28 AM
Exactly what DannyBoy said. This works for any movie where there isn't much motion within the scene but the camera is panning left or right. You capture frames from two viewpoints, just a bit apart from each other and after a bit of Photoshop fiddling....voila!

Anyway, here's an Inhumans thing I did for a thread on the Drawing Board (http://www.drawingboard.org) .
http://www.rickcortes.com/inhumans.jpg
Lockjaw and Medusa of the Inhumans, digital
I posted this in my birthday thread...figured I'd lump it in here as well...I finished up the cover art for the DVD release of the stop motion short I worked on, Oedipus:
http://www.rickcortes.com/oed_dvd_cover_sm.jpg
digital
For those unfamiliar, the short film is based on the Greek tragedy with all the parts being played by vegetables. Oedipus is a potato. He's followed around by a sheep, played by a cauliflower. That's them silhouetted against the sunset. This was all done in Photoshop. It will fold over for the DVD cover and eventually be covered in copy and titles and images...the usual DVD crap.

The arrows make it look like those are diagrams from a safety manual.
IN THE EVENT OF A ZOMBIE HELLHOUND ATTACK THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS MAY SAVE YOUR LIFE!
5. Do not leave the rear gate of your pick-up truck down as zombie hellhounds can more easily gain access to your vehicle and attack you, even when the vehicle is in motion.
6. If you see a zombie hellhound, do not exit your vehicle.
7. A zombie hellhound may be distinguished from an ordinary dog by its distinctive, bone-chilling howl.
9. If you see a stray dog by the road, do not stop to pick it up. It may be a zombie hound from hell.
15. Zombie hellhounds will move to high ground to gain a better vantage point from which to spot their prey. Seek hiding in a place of refuge not visible from nearby high points.
18. The hellhounds will bark and howl dreadfully when they have spotted a potential victim. Assume you are the intended target and prepare to defend yourself or flee.
19. Water is no barrier to a zombie hellhound as they are excellent swimmers. Unless the water is holy, then you might be safe.
20. Zombie hellhounds move with unnatural speed and cannot be outrun.
22. If you are overtaken by a zombie hound from hell and do not have a weapon with which to defend yourself, play un-dead. It may leave you alone.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! God, I hope that's the premise of the movie! Time to do a comic book together, Maija! :D :D :D
R.
Maija could keep several artists busy with just her whimsical notions of a single afternoon.
Actually........
Eight pagers by Petersen, Fitz, Jeremy, Rick, maybe John Thompson, heck I'd even make time to illustrate a Graham two pager, I bet Cure can manage a pin-up, even in college... That could be a pretty collectible issue of
Maija Graham's Hair-Brained Schemes and Other Whimsies
We aim for Comicon. We have printing deals. I'll have a higher profile due to Hellboy Animated. Rick could sell it at the Zowie booth.
Maija, give it some serious thought about whether you want to do it creatively - forget the money logistics for now. And let Rick and I know by email.
Totally serious.

Time to do a comic book together, Maija!Heh heh :)
Man, I'd SO much rather be doing a comic book collaboration than what I'm working on right now!
But I'll let you know if I ever come up with a genius Alan-Moore-like script. About a zombie dog. Who travels the country side befriending those in need. And then eating their brains. The Littlest Hobo-eating Zombie
Maija

Totally serious. Good Lord, man, you want me to come up with SIX scripts in time for people to draw them by SDCC? I have, like, three that have sat unfinished for YEARS and aren't likely to be done any time soon.
But I'll give it some thought.

Not to co-op Rick's thread and it's all up to Maija but, unlike the Christmas exchange where it's the warm heart and good will that counts, not being able to draw limits your participation. The idea is that Maija does all the writing. :(

I'm sorry you weren't able to do the shading you wanted to, Rick since his bright light seems a bit odd casting no shadows, but the composition and line work are very nice.

No filters were harmed (or used) in the making of this Loki drawing. :)

Thanks for the comments and support, pals.
David: I tried to limit my reel to shots where I did the majority of the work so for the most part, I did everything in every shot (the main exception being the Grey's Anatomy sequence which was a collaborative effort between a few other artists). A lot of the detail work is hard to see in this small, compressed video clip. Here's a detailed rundown of the work I did per shot:
1. Lady of Rage music video – frame-by-frame tracking of image onto chromakey tear-away paper.
2. Ice Cube commercial – bluescreen composites; hand-drawn electricity. Also co-supervised the shoot.
3. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen feature – frame-by-frame removal of blue-suited “invisible man”, replaced with background (note: no clean backplate provided).
4. Phil of the Future TV series – designed, created, animated watch graphic; tracked onto watch face.
5. My Name is Earl TV series – removed planted knives; re-animated fly-in of knives.
6. I, Robot feature – animated I.D./badge scan.
7. Son of the Beach TV series – hand-drawn cel-style animated bird, composite.
8. Deuce Bigalow feature – created algae element, tracked, rotoscoped removal.
9. Phil of the Future TV series – designed, created, animated screen graphic.
10. Tower of Terror TV movie – created matte painting from photographic elements.
11. Phil of the Future TV series – bluescreen actor composited over background bed crash.
12. Joey TV series – created background matte painting from photographic elements; actor shot on black backdrop, frame-by-frame articulated mattes to place in front of tracked matte painting.
13. Sabrina the Teenage Witch TV series – rotoscoped “smudge” effect; animated genie bottle cap.
14. Weird Science TV series – split screen “ghost” effect.
15. Phil of the Future TV series – hand-drawn electricity.
16. Sabrina the Teenage Witch TV series – animated, composited 2D playing card elements.
17. Phil of the Future TV series – RV warped and composited, created “time tunnel” effect using existing light elements, warping, hand-drawn energy and electricity. Removed unwanted background elements, expanded background fencing.
18. House on Haunted Hill feature – animated/warped/re-tracked background painting.
19. Phil of the Future TV series – matte painting to elongate room, animated lights activating.
20. Son of the Beach TV series – hand-drawn cel-style animated bird, composite.
21. Mastercard commercial – extensive clean-up of latex make-up on actors.
22. Baby Bob TV series – composited adult actor’s mouth onto baby actor; augmented with subtle facial/jaw warps.
23. Power Rangers TV series – created 2D explode element, composited and augmented with existing explosion elements.
24. I, Robot feature – articulated mattes of actor to remove/replace background.
25. My Name is Earl TV series – combined actor plate with car plate; multiplied amount of cars.
26. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation TV series – composited hand-drawn electricity.
27. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen feature - frame-by-frame removal of blue-suited “invisible man”, replaced with background (note: no clean backplate provided).
28. Joey TV series - created background matte painting from photographic elements; actor shot on black backdrop, frame-by-frame articulated mattes to place in front of tracked matte painting.
29. Grey’s Anatomy TV series – replaced many backgrounds, requiring rotoscoped mattes of most foreground elements; removed stunt people, cables, added debris, explosion elements, etc.
30. Malcolm in the Middle TV series – combined several passes of actor into one six-armed character; animated cookie bites and cookie crumbles.
Thanks, again!!

Thanks! For the record, though, this reel represents probably .1% of all the work I've ever done and maybe 5% of all the shows I've worked on. Mentioning most of those shows doesn't make my resume more impressive though (nobody's patting me on the back for my stellar work on Time Trax). :)
Anyone with very specific questions on technique, by all means, I'm happy to answer.
I'd like to note that although the animated blue bird isn't the best thing in the world, I had not animated anything cel-style before the time that I did those shots and I had to complete about 45 seconds of animation in about a week having had no experience doing it before (the closest thing was doing Bil Plympton-style stuff in high school). It's a cliche to recommend the Preston Blair book for 2D animation hopefuls, but I read that book and that's all I needed to complete the project (with the help of my friend Sue and a lot of looping). And I got to animated a bird taking a crap! :)

Nice action scene, Rick! He's about to loose his head.
Is the centipede part of the plot or did you see that gory footage that was on the net a while back showing a real giant centipede killing and eating a mouse?

Is that your MouseGuard piece Rick!? Dude, I'm super impressed!!! You should work in watercolors more often. :D

Thanks, guys!
Gary: This piece was entirely inspired by that video. I was mesmerized by it!
Neil: I forgot to mention that this piece, as with all my pin-ups so far, was colored by the amazingly talented Anjin (over at anjindesign.com). And the colors are completely digital.
Thanks to David for letting me be a part of Mouse Guard!

That's awesome. Lieam looks like he is going to seriously kick centipede butt...well, if centipedes had butts.
He reminds me of a very evil hamster I once had, who furiously leapt out of his cage onto my head in the middle of the night while I was sleeping. Aeeeiie! Thankfully he did not have two tiny swords.

More Mouse Guard, for fun.

Great stuff Rick!
Especially the X-23. And the Daimo/Liz/Roger piece is among the very best ones I've seen you do. Yay!

Great stuff! That mouse is bad-ass. I love the offensive/defensive claw/shield thing he's wearing. I'd hate to be the cat that runs into that mouse.
X-23 looks good but, like you, I don't know anything about the character. It looks like her creators got some things wrong when they cloned Wolvie though.

I admit it..i read some Marvel books, but not anything with this character. Is she as pigeon toed as she looks?
hellboyone
05-12-2006, 10:39 AM
Nah...that's me being silly and giving her character. :)
Apparently she was created for the X-Men Evolution cartoon and Marvel decided to integrate her in their regular continuity.

I second everything Morna just said, Rick! Great stuff!
BTW, is Anjin a working colorist currently? If so, why haven't you jumped on his/her bandwagon and started a comic book of your own together!? Is is that Hollywood money that keeps you going back to effects work? :p
hellboyone
05-18-2006, 06:50 PM
Anjin's got his own gig (check out his site, anjindesign.com) but he just did a coloring job for Amazing Joy Buzzards' creator Mark Smith independent of me so he's starting to get good notices in comics which was my goal from the beginning. I'll continue to work with him as long as he's not sick of my crap! :)
And now...this:

Ha, ha, ha! Funny stuff, Rick. I love that the fish man is dreaming about being a bird man. And the rotten egg reference is good. And Hellboy driving with the RHOD is pretty funny too!

I already complimented you (elsewhere) on those Mouse Guard beautiful
illustrations, Rick. Let me say here how much I actually enjoyed that HB/Abe
strip: I am impatiently looking forward to read more of these :D
(and they are tempting too, cause I wanna do one too: speaking of inspiring
each other ;))

Manbat is great. I want him to team up with Crimony Crabhead for some capers. Or to eat Crabhead's head.
I love how Dr. Tran looks angry, but not in a "I shall smite thee" godly way, but in a "Why did you put me in this costume?!!! Who are you people?!! I have to do chores!!!" way. :)

RIP Dimebag Darrell.
Now do the Hickey brothers (My Name is Earl) Dimebag reminds me of Earl. If he was heavier. And had long hair. And tattoos.
Okay he looks nothing like Earl. :)

The zombie/mummy from the Lobster Johnson thing? I made it up. But I probably channeled the dozens of mummy references I have when I did. Thanks, Johann!
Ta2grrl: I'll ask him.
Ruta: It'll be fun to draw the Earl bros. I'll do that this week.
Morna: "Dimebag" Darrell was the guitarist for heavy metal band Pantera. He was shot on-stage a few years ago by some crazed fan.
Thanks, guys. I'll try and post more regularly....

This weekend at Bi-Mon-Sci-Fi-Con at the Midtown Bizplex, special guest Adam West will be signing autographs and eating the flesh of his fans.
What became of all of his Bat-things on the utility belt? Did he eat them? Were they stolen by grave robbers?
Fantastic job on the hands and the drapery on his collapsed torso and crotch. I would have given him less nose and more lips, but that's just me. He's friggin' creepy, but I can imagine him doing a creaky, "Thriller"-esque Batusi.

I figured the first thing Zombie Bats would do was start going through his belt (you never know where brains might be) and then shit started leaking out and exploding on him (let that be a lesson to all you kids who carry acid and explosives in your belts). :)
