Just do it anyway. If security comes for you just explain what you are doing and show them your work. Ask for comments/criticisms on the work to distract them. And don't forget to lay on the charm, but not too thick.
Zombie Abe is cool like no other.

There's an art to drawing people in public as much as there is to the artwork itself. It's all about quick looks and not letting your eyes linger. If you start to feel suspicious, you'll start acting suspicious. The airport's one of the best places to sketch people since there are lots of 'em and usually you're there for at least an hour uninterrupted.
Then there are those times when some cutie will notice you drawing them and suddenly you have a great conversation starter. Of course, if you're drawing her as a zombie, it may backfire. :)

zabalou: I'm just waiting for the right day to start on it. It's gonna be a huge undertaking since I'm planning on redesigning the site as well. Something simpler and no nonsense will be the key.
Here's something maybe-kinda cool I discovered in my ongoing apartment cleanings. I drew this sometime in 1996 on 12" x 18" paper. I hardly ever draw this big (even comics pages) so this is a rarity for me. It's a drawing depicting my 3 favorite comic book characters at the time: Jesse Custer from Preacher, Jack Knight as Starman, and big Red. Boy...my Hellboy sure has changed!

Nice, Rick! She looks like she'd put a fist in your gut if you looked at her "wrong". :D
So, do you sketch in colored pencil, or do you tint the linework after its scanned? I'm curious because colored pencils are notoriosly hard to erase, and your drawings never look like any corrections have been made. If you use erasable colored pencils, what brand are they?
hellboyone
09-22-2004, 01:16 PM
John: Thanks! I swear by Sanford col-erase pencils. It's usually what animators used and I started using them after swiping some from an animation studio. They come in a variety of colors. I prefer them to normal pencils since they don't really smudge and since I'm left-handed my hand tends to drift on the paper left to right and it smudges everything. They oughta be available at most art stores. A little while ago, Sanford announced they were discontinuing many of the colors so I stockpiled a ton of certain colors but I guess they got enough complaints that they scratched the idea.
The color in the drawing above is Tuscan Red, my new favorite (this week). :)
I will, however, tint the lines digitally sometimes for effect (like the Lucifer drawing).

I'm beginning a new project that will take up a lot of my free time. I've started restoring my family's photos. Many have been damaged in storage and from regular wear-and-tear and I figured it was time to start repairing them. I've done a few already, this being the latest one of my sisters Melissa (left) and Stella, taken in June of 1970 (I'm still 3 years away).
http://www.rickcortes.com/photography/sisters_comparison.jpg
It was scanned at 600 dpi and cleaned up in Photoshop in a couple hours over the last few days.
I think it came out pretty nice and the print out from my photo printer is phenomenal.
I've already done this kind of work before, usually for music industry clients, but I think I'll start offering my services to the public via my website soon! If anyone's interested, let me know.

EDIT: Okay...I finished this up. So, I did a few different things for the art exchange but I decided not to send this one. Not for any reason...it was mostly an arbitrary choice. Enjoy!

It was actually much, much later...issue 364. Here's the famous cover by the amazing Walt Simonson. This is one of my favorite comic book runs of all time.

I love Walt Simonson. I met him and his wife Louise here in Albany, NY at a comicon (Fantacon, now defunct, :( unfortunately) many years ago (Late eigthies, early nineties). They were such gracious folks and he gave me a free head sketch of the Beast from X-Men. Louise was the editor/writer on the X-Books durng the whole "Fall of the Mutants" storyline.

Wow, Rick, what an awesome piece! It was great to come home from work today and see it. Thanks so much for making it and thanks for making it for us.
It is a truly great piece presented with confidence and control. The “collage” style of composition works really well for the disparate subjects/images. The strong shadows are rendered well and a style of drawing Rick Cortes now owns. I think it was a good decision for you to put the heavy band of black along the bottom. The monkey, skulls, frog and Rasputin are all great drawings in their own right (It intrigues me to imagine the Rasputin image presented in the full square with all that white space above and to the left of his face). The outer edges of all your blacks are defined with beautiful line qualities, full of all kinds of variety. The monkey really blows me away. I like just passing my eyes over just his (or hers) outline and seeing the great diversity of line.
Can't wait! :D

Kool pets.
I'm not sure about the background. It does a great job of conveying distance but I think it is maybe too light. Have you tried the same thing in a more gloomy colour? - but not blue. In colour theory (and in visual perception) blue = distance. My inclination would be to use a warmer "closer" colour so as to be in keeping with the Hellboy sensibility of creepy closed in dark corners. Dried blood maroon maybe - just something more malevolent than pale foggy ochre! Sorry - don't mean to be critical, you are getting very facile with the medium and it invites another level of critique! :)

It does need another color and I think I need to move away from the "cloud" background effect too. I tried it in several colors and they all looked bad. I might go with the common faded gradient fill effect.Yeah, and you should get that big nose fixed too!

I'm guessing from the dangling leash that Eric has recklessly created a troublesome pet of some kind.
Cool HB drawing.
The stump of a cig he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath,
He had a grim face and a little round belly,
That shook when he pounded the crap out of monsters like a bowlful of jelly.

It does give that impression, doesn't it? However, that badly-drawn dangly thing is Eric's scarf which he was wearing earlier in the story (this is page 6). Your assumption suddenly sounds better though (even if doesn't make sense in the context of the existing story).

I'm extra pumped for SDCC now.
Speaking of SD now, is there going to be a giant sketchbook session at a hotel there again? I missed the last one because I suck (and didn't know about it), but are there any plans for one this year?
Rock on, yo.

? There's more to plan than "show up with pencil and paper?" I'm tingly with anticipation!

The extra planning'd involve getting more lighting in the lounge near the bar... more seating available, and it'd allow folks to... y'know, draw. And not walk 20 yards to get a beverage.
Also it's possible we'll try someplace else!

He's planning the piñatas, ice cream cake and free beer as well as promotional Crimony Crabhead crabcakes. :p
A Crimony Crabcake-- I mean, Crabhead mini-comic would be great!
Now I have a craving for crabcakes.
EDIT: Dammit, Toonimator you had to go and post a rational answer as I was writing mine! ;)
Better lighting would be great, but if you could find a location with cheaper drinks, that would be nice too. Although those big leather chairs were mighty comfy.
Like Qualcom Stadium? We may have to if any more people show up. ;)

Are we planning the 2005 SDCC gathering of Hellboy-ites already?! Seems like a good time I guess and for sure, I'm in! Also, we have to have the officially designated "who is the hottest guy from the Messageboard" thread after the Con like last year ;) I don't remember which female from the Messageboard started that, but it was a hoot reading the comments from different girls (I think girls at her job that saw our pics) who gave comments. No, it's not a ego thing at all :p

Sketchbook Sessions is a whole separate thing from the Hellboy gathering, although Mike attended. (I'm sure he'll think twice this year)
We might meet earlier than Saturday this time for a possible lunch or dinner. Maybe a separate weekend meeting for those who can't ditch work or school.
And of course you bring up Naiad's "Hottie Poll" because you scored high while some of us "stunningly handsome but frickin' old" types were not appreciated.

Haha! Yeah...see, I shower when I'm at a convention and have yet to wear a Storm Trooper outfit so I don't think I'm nerd enough for a makeover, although I'm plenty nerdy.
Although having action figures, comic book artwork, and an ET record/storybook behind me in that photo won't convince anyone of what I just said. :)

Been a while...
It's convention preview time! I'll be in this year's Zowie! compilation once again and I'm in the home stretch of finishing my story. Here's a sneak preview of the opening splash page. This was done ENTIRELY in Photoshop, pretty much a first for me. Graytones to come, if I have time:
http://www.rickcortes.com/page01.jpg
And another sneak preview of part of a page (can't give away too much!) from a story I'm doing for Michael Molcher for hiz Brit zombie mag (hope you don't mind, Mike!). I'll hopefully have copies of this in SD as well:
http://www.rickcortes.com/photo1.jpg
And a couple of color illos I did for the pre-school where my girlfriend teaches. This is a style I've been cultivating a while which might be something I use for children's books I've been contemplating. We'll see. These will likely end up in my new sketchbook, which will hopefully be ready by the time con arrives:

1: How big is your Zowie story? ya got me hooked with the dialouge so far..
2: I got a chance to look at the zombie script, glad it fell into the hands of someone more capeable than I...looks good!
3: What fun illos! I like the worn knees on the construction worker's jeans.

That's a terrific splash for Reckless Eric! At last we will have the exciting conclusion (or continuation?) of Eric's reckless adventure into space-time. The zombie story looks good too. I can't wait to see both books.
I like the pre-schooler illos. The farmer with the chicken under his arm cracks me up for some reason.

Wow Rick - That looks spectacular!!
I would never have guessed it was you who did them (don't get that the wrong way ;)). I'm especially impressed with the first two pieces. How the heck did you pull those backgrounds off? And the way Eric looks on top of it is SO fun. If the rest of your story looks that good we're all in for a ride. Put a ticket aside for me, will ya?
Cheers! / Jakob

Petersen: Thanks, buddy.
1. This part of the Zowie story is about 12 pages. It might be 10, depending on whether or not I'm a slacker this week. :)
2. It would be interesting to see what you would have done with it. I don't know about the more capable part. You would have done as well if not better.
3. It was fun to do.
ruta: Thanks! It was gonna be a continuation but I think it'll end up a conclusion as I want to be able to do something else for the next Zowie and perhaps get going on a proper Eric book (with his pal, Jack Argus). I may flesh out both parts and release it as its own book. Not sure yet...
jakob: Ah...backgrounds. The bane of my existence. I depend on the kindness of reference photos.
Johann: Part 1 of the Eric story is still available in Zowie 1 which can be had here:
http://www.sketchbooksessions.com/new/index.htm
...or at any con I'm attending, the next being SD. Thanks for the interest!
Zowie 2 is shaping up to be an incredible looking book, which is why I'm spending more time beefing up my segment. There are too many great artists in it who've already done some amazing pages.
Thanks, everyone.

The second episode will be in Zowie 2 which hopefully will be available at this year's San Diego convention. If it's not, it'll be available in some form later this year.
I'm thinking of concluding the whole story in its own book apart from Zowie after that (and it will include the first 2 parts).
