I say Bullock. He always did what was necessary if it was right.

After that...okay, I'll admit it, Harold. I thought he was an interesting character.

I'd agree with Alfred Pennysworth.

Honorable mentions: Bullock, C. Gordon.

'Best' is one of those hard-to-pin-down terms but if you are talking about the person without whom Batman would not be Batman then Alfred.

Alfred is a great character sometimes, but can be kind of a lame plot device at times, too. I'm talking about stuff like, "Oh yeah, Alfred used to be a spy/pilot/chef/medic/taxadermist," or whatever they need him to be.

I think Jim Gordon is one of the best supporting characters in all of fiction, not just comics. I guess it's because of how well developed his character is, how torn he is sometimes about his role, Gotham, and Batman's work.

Oracle.

She's his eyes and ears.

Damnit, you beat me to it for once. I thought about saying that last night but I didn't know if she qualified.

Alfred the butler. Batman wouldn't be the same without him. Does Alfred even get paid?

This has to be Alfred. For all that he does, I don't see how anyone else is even close. From tending Bruce's wounds, to being the rare ear that gets to listen to his concerns, he is vital to the Batman saga.

Alfred Pennyworth and Jim Gordon to a lesser extent.

Jim Gordon.

#2 would be any thug attached by his face to Batman's fist.

Oracle.. hands down.

emotionally for Bruce, Alfred has proven to be a steady anchor for him. though sometimes Mr. Pennyworth is written like Batman's Mr. fix-it. Kinda
like R2D2 for the Jedis. Which is sometimes not convincing plot-wise.
