They call it the "Music Genome Project." Basically, you input a song or artist. The system matches you up with other songs that are similar to that song or artist's songs based on a number of criteria (as I understand it, there are something like 40 criteria for vocals alone).

I heard about it today on AirAmerica and have been playing it all afternoon. I've got to say, I think they've got me hooked. It's free and I'm liking it even better than Yahoo's Launchcast -- and I love Launchcast.

I used that for a little while, and then completely forgot about it.

Commercial radio where I live is horrid and there are so few outlets to discover new music that I enjoy the fact that I hear something new just about every three or four songs. It takes awhile to "adjust" to your particular music preferences and mine are kind of diverse, so it's a pretty odd playlist most of the time, but it's such a cool idea that I've got my wife's computer hooked into it at home as well.

I'll have to give this a try. I'm pretty sold on Launchcast though. How diverse is the music available because my tastes are very eclectic and tend to the obscure.

I just now came here specifically to make a thread about this.

I've been playing with this a bit today. I've got a pretty good R & B/early Rock/Jump Blues station working. I have noticed some major omissions, though. No Wynonie Harris and no Ivory Joe Hunter.

I've run across some omissions as well. From what I've seen (or heard), it seems to be a little more skewed towards current music. The guy in the interview I heard said he's got 15 or so people working for him and they're reviewing more and more songs every day to add to the database. I do like the feature where the system says it will take the suggestion for review. I wonder how quickly they get to such suggestions?

Apparently, today I'm stuck in a Clash loop. This is about the 3rd or 4th Clash song I've heard in the last couple hours.

I've definitely noticed the skew toward current music when I was playing with Johnny Cash, George Jones, et. al. I had to try to teach it that Garth Brooks was not an acceptable likeness.

It's doing a good job on "cool jazz" and "lounge" music though.

How the hell do you get Ashlee Simpson out of ABC?

Ask the system. I do wish, however, then when one asks "Why did you play this?" one would get a more comprehensive answer.

A friend introduced me to it just a couple weeks ago. It's a nice variety. Sometimes some odd links though, yes.

I think for me, at least, I've found it a great way to discover new things that are like an artist who I'm only somewhat familiar with others in their style or two capture a specific kind of mood, both of which LaunchCast always seems a little sketchy at (although it's great at playing lots of songs I already love), so I can't imagine I'd ever replace one with the other.

It's okay, but the fact that you are limited to how many songs you can skip per hour renders it useless after about 20 minutes for me.

It's not that great if you have slow dialup internet. The song plays for two seconds, pauses for two seconds, then plays for another two seconds.
