View Full Version : The latest Hawkman was fun.

The art alone was hilariously over-the-top. Hawkman is so badass he's squirting testosterone off the page and Hawkgirl is quite the sexy hellcat lately. Howard Chaykin is a perfect fit for this book. The idea to re-cast these two as the Conan & Red Sonya of the DCU was quite nice, but, alas, their partnership likely won't last the latest Crisis, but its probably best to split them up while their at the top of their game so they can make a big deal of it when they're reunited again.
I liked the armor on the Thanagarians, particularly the cheif baddie. Casting the Thanagarian Wingmen as a bunch of armored facsists is sweet. Like Stormtroopers with wings.
Ah, this book is so deliciously stupid. Easily my favorite guilty pleasure this week. Tons of dumb fun.

Spoilers below
I'm just having trouble keeping track of who is attacking who and why.
A Thanagarian pulls Rann into Thanagar's orbit, which effectively destroys Thanagar, so the Thanagarians move to Rann and try to take it over (people keep blaming the Rannians like it's their fault - do they not know a Thanagarian is to blame?).
The Hawks, while looking like Thanagarians, are on the Rannian side. Charley and his crew were part of the Thanagarian side, but now are on the Rannian side. I know the Psions, the Gordanians and the Durlans are on the Thanagarian side. The Tamaraneans WERE on the side of the Rannians, right? Until Blackfire turned traitor. She'd really side with the Gordanians and Psions?

In Rann/Thanagar War, she sided with the Thanagarians, even after she betrayed Hawkman and Co. Carter and Kendra sided with Adam Strange because the Thanagarian army was under the influence of a cult, which is why Thanagar was shot into Rann's orbit. The civilians probably didn't know that.
This particular issue was fun. The art was great, and Hawkman seemed to enjoy the hell out himself slaughtering all those troops. I wouldn't call it dumb (or a guilty pleasure for me), though it wasn't as deep as previous issues. Can't wait for the next one

At first I thought we were going to have to endure more unlimited shots of boring, unclear battles ala R/T-W. But after wasting almost half an issue, we finally got down to something interesting. Yes, sometimes this title's been way over-the-top, but at other times we’ve gotten some solid super-heroics. I’ve been enjoying it.
Here’s hoping for more like the second half of this issue and less of anything resembling R/T-W.
(BTW, Blackfire seems to be getting around pretty good this month.)
