Seriously. Why the methuzeleh is she a part of the 198?! Out of all the many characters created throughout the years, they really scrapped the barrel to go and save LILA CHENEY, who is one of the worst characters ever to grace the pages!
For one, she is nothing more than Claremont's own singing superheroine, used to supplant Dazzler in the X-Universe.
For another, she has a completely worthless, deus ex machina power of lame: teleporting across galactic distances. If there were ever a character whose power screamed "PLOT ELEMENT!" Lila Cheney may be it. Layla Miller comes close. You try to whittle down the X-Universe, make it more real, destroy the fantastical elements like Shi'ar, Mojo, and everything else silly-sounding, and you are going to bring back yet ANOTHER one of Claremont's lame backburner characters?! Douglocke never sounded so good right now.
Anyone else with me? Let's talk about Lila Cheney, the character that just. won't. die. but at the same time really needs to be offed like no other. The "awesome factor" of the 198 loses all credibility when Lila Cheney is amongst the mutant survivors. Wanda's woogie left decent characters like Darkstar dead while THIS one gets to be one of the "sole survivors" of the House of M?

Get over it. Lila has fans just like every other character, and I am sure her fans don't like seeing someone create a thread just to say she must die.

Lila is a good character. And she's British.
And that is what the Editors decided.
As I do not actually know what the 198 number really stands for...*shrugs*

You try to whittle down the X-Universe, make it more real, destroy the fantastical elements like Shi'ar, Mojo, and everything else silly-sounding,
Why on Earth would anyone want to do that? You take out all the fantastical elements, you have real life. And I already have one of those, thank you. Comics are for crazy, off-the-wall crap that TV writers wouldn't dream of.
Oh yeah, and Lila rocks.

I hate Lila, but I hate seeing characters die because it's true that Lila DOES have fans, and if they were to randomly kill off one of MY favorites, I'd be pissed. Lila can go into limbo for a very long time, though. BUH-BYE, SKANKY MCSKANK WITH CRAPTASTIC POWERS!
I do agree Emma must die, though.

Eh, I just put the title to be provocative. I don't think the character should die, but just write her out. Her powers are too... uh... well... unreasonable. I thought the House of M was to get things to the core, and you kept the character who does inter-galactic travel?
And, Lucky One, it wasn't me but Marvel Editorial who wanted the X-Books to stick away from the crazy alien/alternate dimension storylines a couple years ago. I'm just calling them out on their "flip flops."

I always find these threads amusing. I think anyone who demands the death of a character, should also toss their favorite character into the fire also. Everyone is someone's favorite character, so it's silly to demand you want a character dead. So I guess since you want Lila dead, everyone that likes her should get the right to hope Dazzler gets her head smashed open like a pumpkin? :D

Lila retaining her powers doesn't mean that there will be some crazy alien/interdimentional story coming to feature her.

She and Dazzler serve different functions though. Hell, it's not like Lila is used very much unless
A.) Cannonball needs someone to date (and he and Boom Boom are totaly splitsville it would appear, and he has no other love interest at the moment. Man, why can't he and Dani finally get together?)
B.) Some way is needed to get to some place in space.
C.) A musician is needed for a concert or something.
So, I don't quite see the beef.

Dazzler must die! Since we all know she is SO out of character...you know, being written in the same way for the past few decades instead of how she was in her failure of a series back in the 80's.
Note the sarcasm.
As for Lila.....I actually like her quite a bit. And her power is unique...not a lot of people are intergalactic teleporters.
I also like Dazzler.

She's totally my favorite character. I once threw out my X-Tinction Agenda trade because it cut out the few panels that were a Lila subplot in the original issues in favor of some poorly done pictures of Cable! I was so mad I bought all the X-tinction Agenda trades at my store just so I could burn them!

When Lila Cheney debuted in The New Mutants Annual #1, Chris Claremont used Siouxsie Sioux of Siouxsie & the Banshees as the template for her character:

Too bad she looked more like Joan Jett than Siouxsie in that annual. Well aside from the Sienkiewicz cover, where she didn't look like either of them.

Lila look different depending on the artist. However, Lila is far more decadent a rock star since she is a successful musician than say Dazzler (Lila is not a publicly known mutant unlike Alison Blaire). Lila's decadence was one of the reasons why Xavier did not like Sam dating her.
Lila does have a British accent, although she has homes in both London & California. At some point, Lila became her own character which diverged from Siouxsie.

Lila is an interesting supporting character with a cool power that can be used to tell interesting stories. Why bump her off when there's so much potential there?
I know a lot of readers seem embarrassed by the more fantastic/cosmic elements of comic book storytelling, but who wants to read "realistic" stories all the time (if a story about a short, hairy, indestructible Canadian with metal bones and claws can be called realistic). Personally, I want to read a variety of different types of stories in my comics, from conspiracies to space opera.

Wow. I never knew Lila was modeled on Siouxsie. I love Siouxsie! It makes me see her in a different light. That aside, I still think she deserves to be one of the 198. It's characters like Mammomax and Peeper keeping thier powers while my darling Dani loses hers that gets my goat. In fact, I'm not sure why I'm still reading the X-books with so many of my favorite characters either gone, dead, or depowered now. I think only the continued presence of Emma and M are keeping my hand in these days. :(
[b]Seriously. Galactic space-travel. All I'm saying is that it undercuts the entire House of M when she is one of the "chosen few."
When Lila helped the New Mutants, she teleported the team to London--not New York City. Mirage was particularly upset because all of her identification & money was still in Xavier's school. Lila just brushed it off to say even she has limitations to her powers. Although Lila has galactic level teleporation, she has limits to her powers. The New Mutants--once on Earth--had to find a way back to NYC. I think Illyana teleported them to Limbo & back to the mansion.

The reason Lila needs to die is plain and simple: she gave Ma Guthrie one of the tackiest gifts I have ever seen in my life. When you go to meet your significant others' parents, you bring something with class, not a crystal statue of a scantily clad elf chick.

There's still so much that e haven't learned about Lila, though.
She's mentioned being "Sold" by Earth and seems rather bitter about it from time to time. She's mentioned having taken part in "bloodsports." We really don't even know anything about her going into space.
Plus it's a unique change to see a teleporter than can jump from one galaxy to another, but can't just teleport into the next room.

All of this Sturm und Drang amuses me because, in a few years time, all of this House of M stuff will be abandoned, along with the 198, and another flavour will be adopted. Really, we've seen these editorial edicts a few dozen times now since they started back in the Secret Wars days, and really, alomst none of them hold any sway anymore. Give it time. I actually quite like Lila Cheney. She was the British Dazzler, filling the role that Dazzler vacated once she became a proper X-Man, and abandoned her career.
Now that's no longer the case, is there really any need for her? Possibly not. But I liked her in AoA as well, and think there's still some potential in the character.
She certainly doesn't deserve death. I see no plausible reason for that.
