Lipstick & Dynamite, Piss & Vinegar: The First Ladies of Wrestling is a cinema verte about Women's pro wrestling in the 50's and talks with the wrestlers who were big names of the time.
While I thought that covering this part of pro wrestling would have been great, this "documentary" is just an attempt to hop on the Beyond The Mat bandwagon. While it was going down a linear path & just gets started on the Billy Wolfe era, it goes downhill into "she said, she said" nonsense and bitterness all around.
It could have covered Women's Wrestling as a whole, but decides to just cover the 50's and 60's. There is rich history in the 70's, the 80's, the rise of the Joshis & GLOW and so on & so forth. It just felt very limited. This point is further by footage of WWE women "wrestlers" as the "New generation". You can't go wrong with technique and style evolving into skimpy nightwear..and...fake...boobies.
In short, this was a good subject to cover, but there was no homework done on it. Sure you've filmed a bunch of wrestlers, but you filmed them mostly being bitter. There was no situations explained or detailed. No one in the biz actually being asked to help out (except maybe Vince MacMahon Jr. Then again, who believes anything out of his mouth.). It just came off as a documentary that wanted to say one thing...and just shows the opposite.
It's good to watch once in a while. Just for face value.
