In the latest edition of the collection THE GREATEST BATMAN STORIES EVER TOLD, the last featured story is a Devin Grayson story published a few years ago called "24/7". I missed this story when it first appeared, but having read it in the TPB, I must say it offers an excellent model of what Batman *should* be after INFINITE CRISIS.

"24/7" follows a day in the life of Batman...including his daylight hours as Bruce Wayne. Bruce is shown as considerate and charitable...a man who uses his vast wealth for the good of ordinary people in his community. When it comes time to appear as Batman at night, the Dark Knight is shown as effective and terrifying, but not brutal. He is supportive of his allies (Robin, Nightwing, Oracle) without being overbearing or paranoid, and at the end of his day, does not forget to be appreciative to those who assist his life's crusade ("Thanks, Alfred").

This isn't Batjerk; this is Batman the way he *should* be.

I don't quite get your drift. I just flipped through the book and I really didn't see Batman (ie. Bruce in costume) being supportive to anyone.

Personally I think the term "Batjerk" and "Batdick" is hyperbole.

I like it that Bruce is arrogant and imperial. It's the one thing, for me that makes him tolerable. Because if he were a nice guy on top of everything else . Then he would be perfect and annoying.

I find that characters like Batman, Emma Frost and even Zealot (Wildcats) are far more inspiring because they aren't the nicest people in the world. Yet they fight evil and for those who are weaker. Shows that you don't necessarily have to feel like doing a good thing in order to do it.

I've read that. I'll agree completley. I hate seeing a batman that's hardly any better than the thugs he beats up.

Sounds more like that's what you want Batman to be. "Should" is a very subjective term.

Granted, but given the discussion that has been prevalent here and elsewhere, that "you" isn't just me as a lone individual contrarian against a mass of opposing consensus.

Well, not on this forum anyway. Those who are content with a product they're getting are rarely as loud as those who are discontent in my experience. :)
