...as they were selling copies of this for $4 because of Christmas clearance...

So, of course, I bought one. The other one they had was "Son of the Demon", but I've already got that one.

Do you live in Toronto? The reason I ask because I too have bought Night Cries for 4 bucks from the bookstore. I have to say that it is the best four bucks that I have ever spent. This is one of the strongest Batstories, the writing and imagery stuck to me for a couple of days. It's odd, that most batfans don't seem to talk about it much.

Can you half-spoil me on this? What's the story about?

I saw it in a bookstore here but did not pay much attention to it. I instead
bought JLA:Tower of Babel. :)

Batman: Night Cries
Written by: Archie Goodwin
Art: Scott Hampton

The Story:

Night Cries is a brilliantly written thought provoking story about child abuse. The book begins with Jim on his way to a political banquet when he hears from the radio an entire poor black family from the The Heights has been murdered, afterwards the story shifts to Bruce Wayne arriving at the Safe House: Stop the Hurt charity event. The event is hosted by the Wayne Foundation with the aim to encourage other wealthy Gothamnites to donate some money to Safe House, Safe House is a new child centre support by the Foundation to help children survivors overcame the trauma of being physically, sexually and/or mentally abused. I won't give away anymore details, but the rest of the story involves issues of social class and drugs.

Goodwill did a damn fine job writting this story. It isn't preachy, instead we get a dark story that really examines the consequences of child abuse. This book is intriguing because it wrestles with the one form of crime that Batman can't solve, regardless of what he does.

Warning: This story is not for people who don't like extremely mature adult bat stories.

Art: This book is visually stunning. Its surreal undertones invokes your subconscious. One guy I know got creeped out by it. Hampton painted the book with a blue tone and highlights of ghostly white and gold in some parts.

Suggestion: If you don't mind the subject matter and dark adult Batstories then you really should buy this book. As I have said before, it is really sad that this book does not receive the attention it deserves.

Well, I think you made a good choice anyways, since Tower of Babel is supposed to be great (I haven't read it, myself...but I hear great things from pretty much everyone).

seaflower: No, I don't live in Toronto. I'm in Ottawa. Got it at Chapters.

And yes, this is one of the best reads I've had in a while.

And the artwork is stunning. Reminiscent of Arkham Asylum, in that every panel is, quite literally, a painting.

Ah Chapters, that explains it. I got it at the World's Biggest Bookstore and they are own by Chapters, so we got it for the same sale.

Arkham Resident, if you are reading this post, no worries, I responded to your request perviously. Can't forget about you. Hehehe

Mine is too. Plus, they're pricey.

My Chapters has a whole section dedicated to graphic novels. However, two shelves are graphic novels of various titles (everything from Batman and Superman to Johnny the Homicidal Maniac), but then the other 12 shelves are manga.

It is kind of funny how most of us are from various areas in Ontario, we could have a batevent once in awhile if we wanted to and just have a informal conversations about batman and comics in general .

Sidenote: AGH I can't spell, it should be previously. Not perviously!

I say we meet once a week to watch Batman Begins.

I was thinking of something more like , once a month...nice and loose....

Batman Begins every week as a group/club activity is too hardcore for me, and I am a huge fan. I understand...but...

Hmmmm this idea seems kind of dead, just you and me talking about it....sadness

Don't worry it was just a joke anyways :)

But yeh...I imagine this would be one of those things that would probably last all of one month.
